Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Oh yeah, it was also half the price of the mc/atv jack!
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Stripped the engine down to the long block. Labeling everything as I go, taking notes and hoping I remember how all these little parts fit back together. Every bolt on the heater boxes was hopelessly rusted so I hack-sawed the muffler and pulled them all as one unit.
Pulling the heads tomorrow. Driving them down to Doodle Bug if it looks like they need any work.
Ordering the rings and gasket set once I verify what size I need of everything.

Pressure was way too high on the new one so I had to dial that in. The old pump was high as well, so I cut an extra pushrod down about 1.5mm to get the pressure to around 3.5 (which is still a little high). I put the new pump on using the shortened pushrod and the pressure was nearly 7pounds . Gas was actually squirting out from the accelerator pump cover on the carb. I put 7 of the paper gaskets under the pump and that took the pressure down to about 5pounds. Had to make three more gaskets out of a cereal box. These three cereal box gaskets were the same thickness as the 7 paper gaskets so it's like I have 14 gaskets under the pump. Installed my new quietpack muffler and ran the engine for about 15 minutes trying to burn off the paint/smell. Nice white smoke for about 10 minutes. I'm about to take it for a short spin. I haven't driven it since BAP.
were you using the shorter pushrod to start with? there are two main pushrods, one is a tad longer then the other. if you had to use soo many gaskets, you may have had the longer rod. either that, or a freakishly short fuel pump flange. Lately, i've been having the oppisite problem. I've had to use the long rod, with the shorter style fuel pump. I went thru a box of BRAND NEW flanges, and they were all different sizes. the difference between the shortest, and tallest flange was about 1/8 inch . gotta love this brand new cheap shit
Yeah, I am using the longer (4.25 inch) pushrod, but that is the pushrod that should be used for a generator style fuel pump where the foot is up in the pump. The shorter pushrod is 4 inches and is usually used on the pumps where the foot stick out below the bottom of the pump. I thought about getting the shorter rod, but compared to the height of the stack of my gaskets, I think it would be too short. You may be on to something with the flange piece though. I've got a few extras laying around (both new and used) and I'll check them against the one on the engine to see if any of them are taller. Although I don't really like messing with those things, the only time I ever tried to remove one, it cracked and broke off inside the case.
I always break those damn flanges off in the case. I just use a large wood screw where the threads are a little wider then the pushrod, so it will bit into the bit of flange, screw it down far enough, so you can take a screwdriver, or small crow bar, to the head of the screw, and pry it up, taking the piece of flange with it. take like a minute to get the bastard out, and i've done it like 10 times, lol.
Actualy, another thing i noticed, is that some of the flanges fit perfectly tight in the case, and others just dropped right it. and others even had lots of play between the shaft of the flange and the hole (This is where diggerD, or scott comes in to make a dirty joke). that can't be good, as i can see the end snapping off while running.

Had my first battle with the FI in the vert.....guess the headlight ground does really keep a car from starting....hahaha
It is up and running good for now. Need to find some wheels for it and get it lowered a little.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Friday I spent some quality time with the squareback. I welded in four holes along the windshield where the metal had rusted through under the seals and one hole in the top of the car. I then cleaned the windshield channel, drip rails, and applied a couple coats of Rust Bullet. I also cut most of the bad metal out of the battery tray in order to get it ready for a replacement patch.

Technically....it was yesterday.
Pulled the engine out of Old Yeller yesterday, and pulled both heads.
You can find out a lot of things that way.......
I found #1 had a valve guide come loose, and it tore up the combustion chamber pretty badly. Also #2 and #4 both had guides coming out, but were still intact w/o damage.
Gonna find out if the heads can be saved. The one lost some metal around the guide, and the top of the chamber too.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Got the new clips on the throwout bearing, engine is back in with new tin & carb linkage. I painted the exhaust with some high-heat paint from Por-15, will have to see how it holds up. Just waiting for my wheel cylinders and I should be back on the road...

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
just picked up a disc brake kit for my 72 super (thanks sploval53!!!). I get off work at 2pm tomorrow, and am off the next 2 days, so i plan to start after work tomorrow, and also do a few things i've been meaning to do, like to remove the gas tank, and clean it up. I'm having to change the fuel filter every 2 weeks or so. The entire filter turns black in only 2 weeks . so hopefully its just some crud, and not a rusty tank. if the tank is bad, i'll prolly just install the aluminum tank i have on my rail, temporarily. also if the tank is fine, i'll try to see why the gas guage isn't working. i'm thinking its just grounds, and old connections, but we'll see.

If you end up with a bad tank and don't want to fool with the aluminum tank, I have a really nice, rust free 71/72 super tank that I would be willing to let go. It is an OG tank, not a repop and is in great shape. I removed it from a parts car back in the early 80's and it has been on my shelf since then.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Got out the angle grinder to remove the last pieces of the completely rusted out muffler. Then I pressure washed the heater boxes to get the caked on oil and gunk out of them. Hopefully that will improve the smell when the heater is running.
