Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Jade is back together and driving again...got to change the oil tomorrow and put some miles on it
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
drove it a bunch today- seemed to be running hot. Havent looked into that but adjusted brakes and repacked the front wheel bearings.
I did just put a "real" engine seal in- maybe its not sealing as well as the roofing tape i had sealing it before...

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Sadly, I sold it today. It ripped my heart out. But, I'll get another someday.

It went to a good home, if you saw his westy he will treat it as good. I can give you updates when I see it out in the woods camping. And your welcome to join us when we do and visit!bakertim2 wrote:Sadly, I sold it today. It ripped my heart out. But, I'll get another someday.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
pulled the engine and got her on a table to start rebuilding.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Nice! I've been doing a little work on my engine lately too! Replaced my fuel pump since the other one crapped out. Pressure was way too high on the new one so I had to dial that in. The old pump was high as well, so I cut an extra pushrod down about 1.5mm to get the pressure to around 3.5 (which is still a little high). I put the new pump on using the shortened pushrod and the pressure was nearly 7pounds . Gas was actually squirting out from the accelerator pump cover on the carb. I put 7 of the paper gaskets under the pump and that took the pressure down to about 5pounds. Had to make three more gaskets out of a cereal box. These three cereal box gaskets were the same thickness as the 7 paper gaskets so it's like I have 14 gaskets under the pump. Installed my new quietpack muffler and ran the engine for about 15 minutes trying to burn off the paint/smell. Nice white smoke for about 10 minutes. I'm about to take it for a short spin. I haven't driven it since BAP.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Looks like today was engine pulling day!! I dropped mine to investigate my recent clutch woes. Found one of the retaining springs on the throwout bearing had broken and was laying in the bellhousing! Atleast thats a easy fix...

were you using the shorter pushrod to start with? there are two main pushrods, one is a tad longer then the other. if you had to use soo many gaskets, you may have had the longer rod. either that, or a freakishly short fuel pump flange. Lately, i've been having the oppisite problem. I've had to use the long rod, with the shorter style fuel pump. I went thru a box of BRAND NEW flanges, and they were all different sizes. the difference between the shortest, and tallest flange was about 1/8 inch . gotta love this brand new cheap shit

Yeah, I am using the longer (4.25 inch) pushrod, but that is the pushrod that should be used for a generator style fuel pump where the foot is up in the pump. The shorter pushrod is 4 inches and is usually used on the pumps where the foot stick out below the bottom of the pump. I thought about getting the shorter rod, but compared to the height of the stack of my gaskets, I think it would be too short. You may be on to something with the flange piece though. I've got a few extras laying around (both new and used) and I'll check them against the one on the engine to see if any of them are taller. Although I don't really like messing with those things, the only time I ever tried to remove one, it cracked and broke off inside the case.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I'm investing in a motorcycle jack for next time I have to pull my motor. We made a standard floor jack work but this looks so much easier.DiggerD wrote:

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
harleys an vw got 3 things in comen they both keak oil aircooed an a unik bunch of folks usely stick together like brothers in the two
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Only problem I have with the mc jacks is the exhaust hitting them. I have a transmission jack as well that works great. The top is adjustable and can be tilted so helps out a lot with the buses with no removable apron.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
i been wanting to get a adjustable trans jack justhave made do with the motor cycle jack i would rather have a trans jack

Only bad thing with the trans jack I have is no handle. Its not a hydralic jack, you have to use a 1/2" drive ratchet to raise and lower (screw type) but it does work great. Have pulled enginge and trans together with it in bays and gons and it works really well. Came with a ratchet strap to hold the trans tight but removed that since it had the ratchet meeting on top??? Also not long enough for an engine. But will show it to you when your up this weekend.
