Until you add in the price of the alternator you'll need to run it!!vw57drvr wrote:Well, it's cheaper than new heater boxes.

Yeah, or in my case, new heater boxes and heater channels.vw57drvr wrote:Well, it's cheaper than new heater boxes.
That heater could work for me because my alternator puts out, I think, 54 amps. It's a possibility, but until then, I'll just have to wear thicker clothes for the commute.

Played in the woodshop all weekend coming up with substitute fixtures for the bus. We need some storage space and the icebox is just a space eater.
Have the edge trim ordered and will grab some of the white laminate this week to finish it.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Yesterday I washed it and took a good sunny cruise to grandma's house for Thanksgiving.
Last week, on a nice warmer day, I showed my daughter and son how to replace spark plugs and adjust the valves. Here's a picture of my son putting a new plug in. I've noticed that a tie-dye shirt has become his default "working on the Westy shirt". It seems all the pictures I post of us working he has that one on.

I took the bug down to my grandfather's garage and put it on the lift to clean off some of the grime and oil that had covered the bottom of the car.
I also did some clearance checks for my next mini project that I'm planning to do soon.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Changed out the master cylinder in Scooter. The Varga I installed about a year and a half ago went kaput.
It only had 3000 miles. I hope this one lasts longer. I have used a vacuum bleeder twice now and it works fantastic, even though John Connelly (from Aircooled.net) said you can't do it. I bled it with about 3/4 of a bottle. I also changed out the fuel tank with a nicer one that I had boiled out and sealed. I also changed out the filter that I had installed under the tank. It was pretty nasty. Scooter is ready to roll for Monday.

Most of those Varga masters are 50/50 so you're taking a chance putting one in without testing it first. Thank God for e-brakes.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Found out about a week too late this bus was cut up. Grabbed the nose anyway, sure wish I could have had the chance to save it.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Spent quite a bit of time yesterday fighting and cussing with a 2/3 arm gear puller trying to remove my old cracked flaking steering wheel. Finally got it to break free and sanded/painted the steering column and installed my brand new wheel!
Out with the old
In with the new! Need to find one of those VW steering wheel pullers now in case I ever have to remove this one.

Eric that looks great. Josh builds a pretty solid Vw wheel puller.
Hey Jerry and Gang want to do a camping trip soon and wanted to know if you were game.

I'll have to keep Josh in mind then if I ever have to remove it again (hopefully I won't!!!). I talked to the guy on the samba that used to make them (and the hinge pin tools) and he said he may make some more someday. And definitely, so long as we have nothing else going on, we'd definitely love to do some camping. We're going to Gatlinburg next month for a family gathering and were planning to meet up with Jerry and Kelli one night.

It happened yesterday, but I got my new wheels mounted. Really like the way it cleaned the look of the car up.

Took pretty much the whole day to clean it out from the inside - out. It's been needing it for a while.

Pulled the transaxle out of the bus. Hoping to the rebuilt box installed this weekend. This one was still doing pretty good, but was starting to get a bit loud.

Apparently this was a huge mistake!!!
Got everything installed and took it for a test spin. Up and down my road a few times and it sounded great. Then turned out onto the main road and "POP", and that's all she wrote. Not sure what I did wrong, but thinking I did something wrong when installing the axles. To wore out to mess with it today, will start digging into it tomorrow.
On the bright side, while I was broke down, one of the miniature horses from the field I broke down in front of, decided to break out of his fence and come hang out with me. He got a little closer, but I kept shoo-ing him away from the roadside.
