Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Spent yesterday at pull-a-part in Conley. Got some much needed parts including the final switch I need to finish my dash! Also scored a set of 4 Dan Gurney aluminum wheels, misc knobs and a fuse block.

They were. Looked at them several times then finally decided to get them...glad I did. They'll look nice on my Square if I ever get started on it!

Someone on here at one time had a free westy head liner. Meinvw? I'll look through the archives.peregrine67 wrote:I think I'm gonna put stickers all over the peeled headliner in my Westy. Rather than clutter up the bumper I'd put the bumper stickers on the headliner.callahan wrote:pulled that yucky old headliner out last night, going to clean off all that insulation and glue this week maybe throw some paint, we'll see how it looks cleaned up
i can't decide if i want to do a bamboo matt headliner or sticker it up, thoughts?

Thanks for the heads up. I'll search for it.71_georgia_beetle wrote:Someone on here at one time had a free westy head liner. Meinvw? I'll look through the archives.

That might have been me, had a couple. A friend swapped out his for the really nice one, might still have his here, good shape just was bare wood. I have a pretty nice set-up in mine that is a light colored wood, maybe finished birch? Might le it go if you could supply a few similar panels. Going to cut my roof out to open the interior up and was going to cut these to match, but as nice as they are and already cut to fit might be better to pass them along and just make ones to fit when finished.peregrine67 wrote:Thanks for the heads up. washed the 73.
installed the 7mm shifter and a quick shift kit in the 59. tested some custom paint for it as well. still not sure about a muddy brown color. looks like L 73 chestnut brown.

Mine is actually not all that bad. The vinyl has peeled off a little bit and the wood is exposed. But the wood looks good. I was considering just striping it all back. I'm more concerned with getting the engine in top shape right now.meinvw wrote:That might have been me, had a couple. Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Changed the oil and filter and put in some Marvel Mystery oil. Spent about half an hour and half a roll of aluminum tape trying to fix the hole in my rusty, rusty muffler. Let her run for about a half an hour just to see how much she'd smoke. Looked pretty got until she got warm and blew all the aluminum tape off. Then she smoked like crazy.
CRAP! I really hope I don't need to rebuild the engine. I'm gonna put a good muffler on and just keep running her a little bit each day and see how things go.

Replaced my deck lid. Humbug is now tricolor - a yellow front driver side fender and a red deck lid. Also got up under the front to take a look at the steering box and realized that it's going to be a pain in the ass to replace.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
One last day of trying to talk myself out of doing a complete rebuild.
Checked the plugs. Cylinder 1 clean and dry. Cylinder 2 clean and dry. Cylinder 3 dripping with oil and crud. Cylinder 4 clean and dry.
Crawled underneath and noticed that their was even oil around the exhaust port of cylinder 3 too. The others were nice and dry.
Spent the rest of the day reading up about the differences between the type I and type IV engine before I try to pull this this out and start breaking her down. The last time I dropped an engine out of a VW was my 67 beetle and that was in 1983. So with that in mind if anybody has any free time...

Getting ready to swap out engines in my 73. Throw on some overalls and come on over. Also have another engine I need to tear down, so if you want some practice!!
Sounds like with the low miles, and the length the engine sat since run that one of your rings might have stuck and broken. Which is a good thing, better than a bad head and a cheap repair over anything else.
