Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I sanded and filled rust divots on the cowl and windshield inset. Still to damp to shoot K2 primer...dang it.
Heading up to Stockornaut later to check on the waterbug pan to see if the gloss black is dry enough to coat with bed-liner. I'll be bringing Billie some 2" x 2" x 1/8" steel square tubing and a 2' x 4' sheet of 18 gauge steel I bought today for the heater channels from hell on the waterbug.

I went up to Stockornaut tonight and Billie finished welding in the drivers side heavy duty heater channel. He cut the other heater channel out.
I rolled bed-liner on my pan bottom side.
Going back to Stockornaut in the morning to help Billie install the other heater channel.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Have a windshield in the bus now!!! Guy that did it knew his stuff, very impressed. So got all the glass in but one pane on the rear door, get that in and tidy up and should be good to go.
The guy also looked at my 58 and we talked about him cutting glass for the windshields. Already have some but thinking about having him make extras to sell. Anyone interested in some or have other glass they would want? Going to give him a list and see what he can do price wise. The more the cheaper!!
And if anyone needs a bay windshield installed, this is the guy. I broke 2, 2 other installers broke one, he got it right. Not bad either, I supplied the seal, he provided the glass, cutting and insulation for $170. Not bad!!!

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Went to Stockornaut and Billie was almost done with the passenger side heavy duty heater channel. I rolled another coat of bed-liner on the pan. Alex nearly finished stripping down my beam. We all put the body back on the old pan to mark the holes for the body bolts then pulled the body and Billie drilled and tapped the holes.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I was sanding the second coat of filler on the cowl of the '68 and discovered some rust I had missed so I ground it some more and acid etche primed it. After that I 2K primed the cowl and winshield inset also the drivers door jam and the front apron. I did it in the shop with the doors closed because it's so cold and windy today. I had to open the garage door for a while to let the fumes out, phew!
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Friday I got my replacement fuel gauge for my 68 speedometer. Unfortunately all the repros have the red, black and white faces. I was able to carefully pry it off and put the original 68 face on there. Took my old mechanical fuel gauge out and put in my delete plate.
I was sick today, so I called into work. Started feeling a little better in the afternoon so I worked on the door some more. Cut the lower front off getting ready for my graft. While the front skin was off, I coated the insides with phosphoric acid to get rid off any rust that may have developed on the inner repair panel that I welded in last week. Hopefully this week I'll throw some paint on the inside to protect the metal and then weld on the outer panel.
Finally, I took my measurements and started work on my beam. I decided to just do a mild narrow job. 30mm each side which is about 2 3/8 inches total. Need to get some more clamps so I can secure it to the angle iron when I go to weld the adjusters in and get back in one peice. Then it'll be time to cut and move the mounts/supports and modify the shock towers.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
On my '68 I finished blocking the cowl and lower windshield inset. The hood is ready. Both rear fenders done. Both rear inner fender panels DA'ed and acid etch primed. Left rear quarter in 2 K primer. Right rear quarter DA'ed and spotted in with acid etch primer. I picked up my color base (Medium Blue Metallic) and my clear coat today along with some more 2 K primer. I sanded and primed my crusty...missing chrome...horn ring. I painted it silver and cleared it. I don't like it so I'll sand it down and choose another silver or another color. Today was a solid 8 hours of sanding, priming and blocking. I'm running out of places to put things out of harms way.
Pulled the Engine from Oh Bugga Started Tear Down on New Block
New Block.....
Best way to clean these case halves?
Head From Oh Bugga..... Intake valve kept closing up the gap between valve adjustments. This is what I found.....
Seat is either going into head or the seat is wearing away.
Comparison....
Do you think this can be fixed?
Also would like to go back with a Dog House oil cooler. How hard is it to go to a bigger stud?

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Thats not the case you got from me? Media blast, boil, or a lot of harsh chemicals and scrubbing to clean it. You should be able to have that head rebuilt, does not look to have any damage just the seat needs to be re-done. As for the doghouse cooler, if you cannot do the 2 nuts to get it out, easy out the stud and pb blast and torch the halibut out of it! If not just drill and tap and your good to go. What case is that? I just did a B case and after replacing the stud had to drill out the flanges for the later mount. Also make sure you put in the right seals when you do it. generally the green ones you get with a kit are for changing styles.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Hey Jerome, no thats not the case I got from you. I got a ton of stuff for next to nothing and this engine turned so I took it apart to rebuild. The case I got from you the #3 cylinder was locked down, the rod was destroyed and the rear main dowel pin very loose. I need to rebuild an engine so I thought that I would start with this one. Not sure if I'll have it together by the 17th. I'm going to try. No big deal on the condition of the case I got from you, it can all be corrected. Well not the rod.
The case, heads and crank are going to the machine shop tomorrow!

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
My husband went to Griffin to haul our recently purchased 71 Super Beetle Convertible back to LaGrange to have heads installed, and basically, to "get the motor running" (that's girl talk). When he got to Coate's, the motor had already been taken out, and was completely apart. We had to pay $180 to get it out, basically for nothing, the mechanic here will have to start over. I don't know exactly how that happened, I hope it was mis-communication, and not malice intent.
I'll post more on my journey to hitting the open road in my dream bug. I bet my dad's in heaven laughing hysterically at all the trouble I'm having getting this project going, it's been tough. Maybe that's why he never bought me one.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I blocked both rear quarter panels. I DA'ed part of the passenger door jam. Too wet today to shoot any primer. I hand wet sanded the horn ring but can't decide on a color. I chased all the rear fender bolt receivers with a tap. It was a good thing because some were crusty with rust.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Went to the tag office at lunch and got the tag for the bus.

Had a little more free time today so I welded up my beam. Still need to relocate the dampner mount and uprights and cut my towers, but I think the scariest part is over. It was a fun project!

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Got my trans back from rancho today it looks awesome! (Going to start a build thread once the swap begins)
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Awesome Greg! I was wondering if you had gotten it back yet. When are you shooting to have the bus ready?
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Drained the tranny and fixed a leaky boot. Trans was low, I hope my hot wheel is brake related and not the wheel bearing going out from lube starvation. Plan to redo the brakes on that wheel and see if that fixes it. If not guess the bearing is next.
Should get the headlight switch tomorrow, and maybe the end to the electrical nightmare!!

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
How do you plan on cutting the supports off? I think it would have been easier to cut them off before you welded it back together, but looking good so far. When is it going to be lowered?fluxcap wrote:Had a little more free time today so I welded up my beam.
