Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
put a new trans. in my bug and stuck the motor back in.for the tenth time
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Re-did the fuel lines on my 72. I'm running a 44 IDF weber carb, and the carb has a screwed in pipe thread type fitting with a barbed end on it. but its for a 3/8'' hose. so the PO just had a 3/8'' line going to one of those regular fuel filters, and clamped it down over the end, and had the regular thin german hose going to the tunnel line.
So a trip to my FLAPS and a new fitting, and I got risd of the filter alltogether, and just have one piece of hose (i have two under the gas tank anyway).
I also changed out the bosch copper plugs i had, for some NGK platinum. we'll see if the motor likes them or not later on, lol.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Took it on the hwy for the first time yesterday...got home and lifted the decklid to do the grab the dipstick test for heat and it was fine but noticed that the aftermarket tarboard I put on was pulling away from the top of the firewall...fixed it today with a couple of sheet metal screws and BIG washers.

Somebody here (don't remember who) had a tar board come loose and plug up the shroud, overheated the engine- hopefully the big washers will take care of that

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Finally got around to installing the shift rod bushing I picked up at YU Buggin. I can't believe I was able to drive it at all, when I took the rear inspection plate off under the back seat I found that there was no bushing on one side at all, the other side was almost gone and the shift rod was just flopping around back there. I stole those bushings from my '65 and put everything together. WOW I can't believe I didn't do this sooner, it shifts so nice now, no more hunting around for gears or grinding reverse when trying to go into second.
Also picked up some straw beach mats from Walmart awhile back, finally got around to using them as a head liner which turned out really nice. Put in the rear kick panels under the back seat that I picked up from the junk yard the other day and installed a grab handle on the drivers side to cover a couple of holes there.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Put new tires on the back of the 66. As I put the last one on, I prick my finger on a small nail coming out through the tire from the inside! That's what I get for not looking closely at the tires before having them mounted. My local tire guy didn't notice it either.

Drove her all over the place. First to work, then downtown to give blood and then to the in-law's for a while then home.
I've just been diggin' calling Pippi a daily driver again.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Was trying to turn into work today, but there was a crap load of traffic comming from the opposite direction, and the cars behind me were pileing up. I finally see a small opening in the on comming traffic. I decided to go for it, revved the motor up kinda high, and when the small opening came, i went for it, but i didn't realize there was a cop who parked across the street, (i was right in front of him), but i was concentrating on traffic, and that small little opening to hard, to notice him. So i did a huge burnout (didn't really mean to, i didn't think i reved it that high), and i see the cop in my rear view, laughing his ass off. I guess he didn't give me a ticket, or anything, because it was a combination of waiting for 5 minutes, the huge line of cars farther then i could see waiting for me to move (blocking traffic), and the opening wasn't really that small (not enough for the oncomming person to have to slow down or anything), and he must have been in a really good mood. either way, it was hilarious. As i got out of the car in my parking spot (he was across the street, and my parking is facing the street), he gave me a thumbs up. he must have had a bug back in the day or something (old guy) .

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Traded my vert to my dad yesterday. Got his rumble seat car as part of the deal. Got up today and removed all the bolts, gas tank and wires from the rumble seat car so I could pull the body and trade it to Alex for his turkis 63 beetle. After sitting Alex's car off to the side and putting the rumble seat car on his pan we went ahead and sat the turkis body on the rumble seats pan. I figured I better do this so I could at least move it around til I could figure out whether I wanted to use this shell or Pat on the pan. Anyway I just kept looking at the car and decided to go ahead and bolt it down on the pan and get it driving and drive it Hogansville cruise in this evening. Well I made it there....a little late but I drove the new green car! Yeah that's right another green car! It will still probably come back off so I can put Pat on the pan. Pictures tomorrow
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
today i discovered an amazing rust removal spray. I bought it at homedepot. its called "the must for rust" comes in a white bottle. at first it didn't work worth a crap, because i actually read the friggin directions. the directions are crap. it says to spray it on, and let sit for 30 mins, which does absolutely nothing. What i actually did, was first spray it on (do not wet the rusty item, spray it on when the item is dry), and wait a few minutes (4 to 5 mins), then spray it down again lightly, just enough to leep it wet. It tends to dry pretty quickly, but the trick is to keep it wet, and it will work very well.
I had gotten a hood from eric (fluxcap), and you can tell someone a LONG time ago had sanded most of the paint off, and it had a good patina coat of rust, its not quite surface rust, and its not badly pitted, kinda inbetween. there was one area that eric sanded, and got back to perfect bare metal. and some of the areas, just weren't as bad as the others, but the worst, was the very lightly pitted, heavy patina'd rust. well i got lazy, and left the hood out, and the area eric sanded had a light layer of that orange rust. anyhoo. after about 5 minutes of having the rust spray on, ALL of the light orange surface rust came off, and was back to bare metal. after about 10 minutes, some of the lighter rust started to come off. after about 15minutes, i noticed some specks of bare metal on the heavier parts, but the heaviest rust still wasn't budging. after about 20 minutes, MOST of the lighter rust was almost gone, and the heaviest rust was starting to dissapear. i'd say after 30 minutes, about 50% of the heaviest rust was GONE.
Pretty awsome stuff. at this point i had run out of spray. i only had half a bottle anyway, but i was also spraying down my brackets for my wipers. so i prolly only used about a 1/3 of the bottle to get rid of most of the rust on that hood. i shoulda taken some pics, but i really didn't think this stuff was gonna work so well. I'll buy another bottle soon, and take some before and after's.
SWEET!!! Finally a product for us lazy bastards, who don't wanna spend hours wire wheelin rust away, and getting covered in it, and having the taste of rust in your mouth for hours after, hahaha

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I got Pete the type 3 guru to help with the wife's 69 auto Squareback. With Pete's guidance and Steve's help too, we put on new brakes, shocks, trans fluids, and gas tank install. We fired up the engine (junkyard score) in the car for the first time. It is a little rich, but runs well and all the gears in the tranny work. (first time it's been tested)
