I'll probably put the '67 on the street first, I need to spend some serious money on the '57 to get it the way I want it

Yeah, still working on the '57, but the '67 should be ready to hit the streets soon, just waiting to get my ball joints pressed in.

Carefully yanked out the original canvas that I tore a few weeks ago. I'm gonna make a custom new one so I tried to keep the old one in as good a shape as possible in order to use it as a pattern.

Post by fluxcap Fri Mar 19, 2010 6:09 pm

took the carb off and took it completely apart earlier this week and cleaned it. Put it back together and got it running "decent". This morning I found a spring on the garage floor. Uh-oh, apparently it had jumped out when doing the carb work. It was the vacuum diaphram spring so luckily I just had to remove 3 screws and pop it back in its place. Then fiddled with the adjustments and got it running alot better. My carb has been staying covered in gas and sometimes acts flooded when starting so I check the fuel pressure. It was at almost 5 pounds and should be close to 3. Only had one extra gasket so I put that under the fuel pump, but that only knocked it down to about 4.5. Found an extra fuel pump pushrod and took some material off the top off it to make it a tad shorter. Did that a few times and finally got the pressure to about 3.25.

Took it for a 30 mile cruise to see how well my carb tuning went. I made it back home, so I guess I did ok! Let it sit for about 5 minutes and it fired right up rather than acting flooded, so I think the lower pressure is helping. Greatest part of the drive was getting to put the ragtop back. Haven't had it opened in about 4 months. What did you do to your volkswagen today? - Page 3 Icon_biggrin

I guessed to soon. Me and Kelly tried to go for a cruise today. Drove about 20 miles then stopped for gas. Hasn't idled since. Had to limp it home. Won't even idle for a second and the engine is super hot. I checked the timing right before I left and it was great. I just don't get it, drove perfectly yesterday, and like crap today. Gotta let it (and me) cool down for a bit then see what I can find. what carb/ engine do you have? Not sure if you have this, but did you check the idle cutoff valve? i had the wire end pop off one day, and wouldn't idle at all. if that isn't it, did ya try taking the air filter off, rev it up, sick your hand over the carb opening, and let it die? that always seems to clear the carb of crap, when my car runs bad. valves, points? just a thought(s).

It was the cut-off valve. Just got back from messing around with it. I turned the car on, and pulled the wire and re-attached it and didn't hear the click. So I pulled it out of the carb and hooked a ground wire to the solenoid body, and then applied power. Nothing. did this a few more times and finally the plunger started popping in and out.

Now I'm just wondering if the heat caused it to act up. My car has always ran a little hot, but I've never had an issue like this before. Oh well, bout to take it for a test ride.

Drove The Bumblebuggy to the Griffin airport yesterday. Met up with Shakey and cleaned up the plane. FINALLY got to fly it and my head has been in the clouds ever since. It was certainly a beautiful day for a buggy ride.

Do you know the brackets that mount the back-up lights on a '67 Beetle? Try using a set of those to mount fog lights on the front of your '56
