Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
just got back from a 30 min drive and shut the car
off and noticed the red gen light was on after i turned off the car.
Went inside for a few minutes and then went to check the wires on the
regulator etc..
There was smoke coming from either the regulator or generator and both
were hot, the regulator seemed much hotter.
I disconnected the battery but im not sure how to figure out whats going
on.
ignition switch?

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
After a full day of working in the yard I decided I wasn't quite through punishing myself so I try to crank up the '76 Westy after sitting for 12 years.
New plugs, new gas, new oil and new battery and she cranked right up in less than a minute.

Wow, These vdubs are awesome. Thats how it was when I got my 68. She sat since 02 till dec 09, towed her to the shop cause the man (Mr. Ragsdale) said it wouldnt run, put a hot battery in and a in one crank she started. Then I did the plugs, oil, brakes, etc Now I DD everyday.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I was pretty pleased that it didn't take more than that. It has a fuel leak near the cold start valve that I need to fix. Is this a common problem? It was squirting lots of gas everywhere and I was more than a little concerned with it so close to the distributor. Just bad hoses?
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
yikes,
I would look at the hoses and see if they are cracked, dry rotted, or cut. I was looking through the WORLDPAC online catolog we use at work(4nauto in villa rica) and (I dont necessarily need them but would like to replace them) braided gas lines. They were 87 buckaroos. It was enough for a full car(bug)..... Sound like a good price?

As for what I did to my car today. I had gotten a nice nub on my points, so I filed it down and readjusted the points to .016. Then timed it and drove it to the Hooters gathering. Parked in amongst a ton of other awesome VW's and hung out with awesome people all day.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Finally pulled the engine. New push rod tube seals, oil cooler seals, new main seal, new front crank seal, cleanned the screen and new seals under all plates, had hoped to clean and paint the tin but only got the shroud and tins cleanned up. Getting the years of grime off was a pita, spent more time cleanning/scraping/brushing than replacing the seals!! Got the engine on the jack under the bus now ready to go in and mother nature decides to rain on me.. man a need a garage that a bus will fit in!!!

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Didn't have time to post Friday or Saturday but with that said Shawn and I put in the new front tranny mount. I had'nt seen one like it before, it's called a rhino. Very solid piece but the down side is that it has larger bolts so it's a little hard to get them tightened down. I suggest taking a dremmel and grinding out a little area on the mount to allow room for a socket to fit. Other than that it is totally superior to the urethane piece it had on it before. Car feels completely different on take off. haven't drove it much but I report back how it does after a few trips in it.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Replaced my noisy throwout bearing, and the starter bushing while in there. Got in some dyno time, was running lean but a rejet of the carbs brought everything back in line.

Replaced old fuel lines on the fuel injection. Now I can't seem to get her to hold an idle. But the rain has picked up so we'll save that for tomorrow.

Are you sure thats not 98hp? I'm sure your 1915 would put out more than that, right? I would think my little stock 1585(1600) is about 55 to 60. Seriously...
Maybe it's 97.08hp and 68.19tq that would be more in line with a 1915.
