Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
today i found out that the calipers are the same as a 1980 chrysler town and country. they cost $13 for the composite piston caliper, and $18 for the steel piston caliper. Will prolly try to buy the kit, and steel piston, if not guess i'll have to take a chance on a new one

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Did some work to the bus this weekend in prep for Bulli weekend. I pulled the engine, pushed out the dent (looks worse now IMO), rerouted and replaced all my fuel lines, cleaned the engine bay, installed hush mat, threw some paint on the tin and slapped it all back together.
Before
After
Got my little logo crooked but I'm afraid to pull it off for fear the quick pait job might come with it.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Would not worry about the logo, just like the owners here we are all a little off! The dent, get a big bandaid sticker to put on it, and call it a character mark....ifI pulled up either of my buses next to you your dent would look factory!!!bumblebuggy wrote:Did some work to the bus this weekend in prep for Bulli weekend. Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Today i discovered how the rear disc brake set-up was made. I found out yesterday that it had chrysler town and country calipers and pads. But today i found out exactly how it was made pis to follow
First off here is the rail buggy:
I found that the disc brake "kit" was made by someone, not a manufacturer. First off, it uses a stock drum, that had been turned down on a lathe, till all that was left was the center part (with the splines, and bolt holes). here is a pic of it (this is the inside of the drum):
The only modification made to the rotor, was four holes were drilled in it. well three were, one of the existing holes were used (it was a five lug rotor). here is a pic of it:
Here's another pics of both of them:
the drum was machined to fit perfectly inside the rotor. Studs were inserted, into the back of the rotor. So basically it was made like many cars on the road today. the drum was basically converted into a hub wuth studs, and the rotor just slides on, and then the wheel. So to take off the rotor, you can leave the axle nut on, versus a stock set-up, or aftermarket disc brake set-up, you have to take off the axle nut, to get the rotor/ drum off.
Gonna make a build thread on the 60's section if anyone wants to follow it.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
The 4 lug type 3 uses a 2 pc drum, with the hub that you have and a drum that mounts with 2 allen screws. A popular early rear disc setup used the hub with 914 rotors and calipers, with a custom caliper mounting bracket. Looks like you may have something like that, but I don't recognize the rotor. Good luck!

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Oh wow, didn't know that. i saw the center splines, and four lugs, and just assumed someone just machined down a late model bug drum. Awsome. Does anyone know of anyone who sells these hubs new? because the ones i have, the PO (not bryce, lol), welded the lugs to the back of the drum, and i was able to pound them out, but a couple of them took a nicce chunk of the hub with it. If i can't find them, i guess its off to the classifieds, lol.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
also, not sure about the rotor. i think it might also be from a chrysler town and country, but not sure. there are some numbers on it, so i'll try to cross them at work to see if i can find out for sure.
also, i forgot to show the bracket. it was just a piece of 3/8's inch steel plate welded to the trailing arm:
And here's the other side, but together:

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Is it just me, or does the rotor look off center with the axle, and wheel on the last pic
I sure hope its just a funny angle of the pic or something.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Got a little closer to finishing my rework of the PO's botched quarter panel replacement. This has been holding me up for almost 3 years now. Maybe I'll have it back together and driving by spring...maybe.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I'm tired of seeing the pics of everybody out enjoying their VWs while mine sits in my garage with a 1/2" layer of dust on it and all of the new parts I bought for it 3 years ago.
