Take the hood off please even if it is rusty
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Will do on the hood. I have promised the roof to Turbo Mike, radio area of the dash to a friend. I'm keeping the Link pin beam. I've never taken one apart to see how it works. Besides when I find my small window car I'll need it!
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Finally got a little done on my 40 horse build. Finished cleaning up the case halves. Had 2 twisted off tin bolts that I had to drill out and re-tap. Also did a little clearancing in the case for my big-bore pistons, the last time I tried to install them the pistons skirts hit the case and it sounded like the engine was hammering itself apart. This time I took the pistons to a friend that builds dirt track race engines and had him trim the piston skirts and balance them and also did a little clearancing in the case so shouldn't have that problem again.
Case halves are painted. Has anyone ever used the ceramic header paint on a case? I'm hoping it doesn't hold in too much heat. I painted the halves and baked them in the oven to cure.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I hear that applying a thick coat can actually insulate the case and cause it to overheat, and you should only give it a really thin coat. Thats what i hear from thesamba. personally i have no idea, as i've never painted a case. Good luck with that. Oh and LETS SEE SOME PICS OF THAT, lol

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Engine halves are painted cleaned and ready for Assembly hopefully tomorrow the crank and came can go in and the halves put together.
After the halves were cleaned at the machine shop there was some bad pitting around the bottom.
After fixing the pitting and painting.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Well it's been a while since I last posted. My motherboard on my computer burned after a storm. I just in the last day or so recovered some of my hard drive and installed it on my new computer.
My '68 is painted now. I shot it in my garage. I wound up painting it myself because my painter buddy in Otto, NC was no-where to be found and his number was disconnected. I called his Mom here in Tucker, GA and she told him to call but it was too late. I alreadt did it.
The first attempt was somewhat futile. I shot the basecoat and then the clearcoat. It came out with a lot of orange peal. I wound up blocking the entire car with 800 grit and re-shooting the base and the clear. This time I added a pinch of retarder to the clear and it flowed out as it should. I got some runs that I sanded out after a couple of days. I color sanded the entire car with 1000 grit, 1500 grit and 2000 grit then buffed. I went through the clear in a few places but I have no intention of chasing the few spots. I'm not trying for show quality anyway.
I installed one piece glass in the doors. I also insulated the doors with sound dampener. I still have insulate the rear quarter panels with the same stuff.
The newest set back on getting it ready to drive is that my "headliner/glass man" tore his rotator cuff and will be out of commission for about a year. I just found another guy local yesterday to do the headliner.
The waterbug is home from Stockornaut. Me and my buddy George are chasing wiring problems. (Mostly George) Also fuel delivery trouble. It seems the PO didn't believe in fuel filters on FI vehicles. It only takes a speck of trash to ruin the spray pattern of an injector (Or disable it entirely for that matter) I installed a fuel filter between the tank and the pump. We are going to pull and clean the injectors. Also we will pump all of the fuel in the tank through the filter into another container and then put it back in the tank. Hopefully this will solve the poor performance of the motor. George after searching through the Bently shop manual that Alex of Stockornaut loaned me finally found the correct plug-in to scan the Jetta 2.0 computer. We have yet to hook it up but maybe today is the day.
A big thanks to Stockornaut, Billie and Alex.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Got the case put back together tonight. Discovered an issue with putting the 1300DP heads on my 1200. The two top outer head bolts are about 1/2" to short. Does anyone have these 4 head bolts for a 1600? They should give me the extra length that I need. I would only need the 4 top outer bolts.

We should have them at the shop. The best thing is to bring one of the short ones by and we can find some that are a little longer.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Scrounged through some parts boxes and found some of the engine tin I am missing on the bus. Stripped and repainted a few parts and will install this weekend, with hot weather just around the corner I thought it might be a good idea to get this done!!
I need to get back on the front end rebuild of the 71 this weekend too........

so is it nice to finally drive the bus again?
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
This weekend I plan on cleaning the under carriage and suspension. It will be nice and clean for YU Buggin. I need to touch up some paint stops where brake fluid has removed some paint. Clean the fender wells, inside and install some sound dampening. Hey a stereo would be nice too. May start on that also. So much to do so little time!

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Beam is in! Brakes are on! Front end is almost 4 inchs lower!
Old beam out
New beam test fit. Narrowed 60mm (2.3 inches).
Everything fit. Finished all the welds and painted it up.
Put it back in and installed the CB dropped spindles and disc brakes
There are stairs right next to the car so I couldn't get far enough away to really show the drop, but it's much lower!
Tomorrow I need to do an alignment, paint the tierods, swap the master cylinder and bleed the brakes. Then if I have time next week I plan to go down one spline in the rear.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Was under the bus installing the engine tins I cleaned and painted the other day, when I found this beastie sticking in my left rear tire!!
[/img]
After I finished the tins, I had to pull the tire and plug it.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Im super frustrated right now-
Just got the swingaxle the other day. I switched the nose cone to the bus nose cone and hockeystick. The hockey stick from cip1 came predrilled with divots on both sides.
I put the trans in but i cant shift into 1st or 4th- reverse is tough also.
I tried adjusting the shift plate and that only seemed to make matters worse.
