Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Finished rebuilding the motor. I have everything ready to lift up and bolt back in. I have a couple friends coming over on Wednesday to help me put it back in.
While I had some daylight I inspected my front beam. Some recent posts have got me a little concerned about the rust underneath.

Test drove the bus all around today running errands. No problems, and no leaks from anywhere! Guess I can tear into the 71 and fix some of it's problems now, I like to keep atleast one road-worthy at a time.

fluxcap wrote:Bugman114 wrote:fluxcap wrote:Replaced my fuel pump since the other one crapped out. Pressure was way too high on the new one so I had to dial that in. The old pump was high as well, so I cut an extra pushrod down about 1.5mm to get the pressure to around 3.5 (which is still a little high). I put the new pump on using the shortened pushrod and the pressure was nearly 7pounds . Gas was actually squirting out from the accelerator pump cover on the carb. I put 7 of the paper gaskets under the pump and that took the pressure down to about 5pounds. Had to make three more gaskets out of a cereal box. These three cereal box gaskets were the same thickness as the 7 paper gaskets so it's like I have 14 gaskets under the pump.
.....either that, or a freakishly short fuel pump flange. I went thru a box of BRAND NEW flanges, and they were all different sizes. the difference between the shortest, and tallest flange was about 1/8 inch
You may be on to something with the flange piece though. I've got a few extras laying around (both new and used) and I'll check them against the one on the engine to see if any of them are taller.
Finally got around to digging those fuel pump flanges out. The one on the right is an original vw flange, the one on the left is one I got from wolfsburg west about a year ago. There is about 1.5 mm difference between the two. That equals about 5-6 of the thin paper gaskets which according to my work a few weeks ago equals about 1.5 to 2 pounds of fuel pressure. So that definitely does account for some of my high fuel pressure, but not all of it.

Put the motor back in just before the thunderstorm hit.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Wiring, picked up a few misc. parts from the painter...finally, filled a couple of my weld-through holes in the pan, rebuilt most of 1 door, put deck lid on (both a pain in the ass), had a freakin' wonderful day!

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Took her for a spin around the block. filled her up with gas and drove her about 15 miles. Then about a mile from the house she started sputtering like she was choking to death. Looks like I managed to completely clog yet another fuel filter with rust. How much does a brand new gas tank cost? I'm sick and tired of trying to get all the rust out of this one.
But it was fun to put a few miles on her.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
After driving for a bit with the busted beam, welded some supports in. Not a pretty job, but it works. Back to tracking straight and full brakes again! had to use my flux core welder since the big one is down but will go back and do a cleanner job once the other is fixed. Yeah right, probably just drive it till it breaks again!
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
so i drove my car to the family reunion and on the way down this big ass hill my headlight decides to fall out and get run over by my car. then literally two seconds later my header pops off the heater box a second time.

Pulled the gas tank and threw it in the back of the truck. Tomorrow I'll take it to Sims to get de-rusted and sealed.
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
After chasing/verifying wiring for the past two nights, I connected the battery and cranked up the 73 Thing. It started with no issues. Of course, I have no fuses installed yet. I'll start putting those back in one at a time tomorrow. Hopefully, she'll move under her own power tomorrow as well. Then I'll find out if I have any brakes!

Same exact thing happened to mine but it had been running that way. Hot weather maybe? Weird!
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Changed the fuel lines and relocated the fuel filter on the RHD 1302.
Checked the timing and it is dead on.
Gonna "drive my VW to work" tommorow.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Replaced the fuse block on the Thing. Several of the wires were weakened with many broken strands at the connectors. Clipped those off and crimped on new connectors. One wire felt like it has only 3 or 4 strands left. Jeez.

Pulled out the pedal cluster and finally weaseled it apart. Now waiting on my drill to charge back up so I can remove the rest of the rust and get her painted while I wait patiently for my parts from CIP1 ....wait and wait.
