Re: '76 Westy
Now that I'm actually driving her again the priority on my to do list is shifting.
New tires.
Check and clean brakes.
Start working on body rust issues.
Fix the wiper motor.
Replace canvas.
Replace turn signal bulbs.
Cover the seats.
Clean and dye curtains.
Fix cabinets.
Install a radio (should I use the 8 track I took out of it?)
etc.
etc.
etc.

I still see them at Goodwill every now and then. I used to pick them up just for giggles but they were never in good enough shape to actually play.
Re: '76 Westy

I had thought of getting an 8 track for the ASBug and some Doobie Bros. and CCR tapes for the drive...

Re: '76 Westy
Yeah, I was wondering how long it would take before somebody made a cooking joke. Y'all did not dissappoint.
Re: '76 Westy
Bought some tires from ASBug this morning. I'll get 'em mounted on Monday and take her for a drive after work.
Re: '76 Westy
If it ain't one thing it's about five others. I took her for a drive today. I think I got the fuel issue solved but now she has a little knock when I let off of the gas. Suspension? Brakes?
Suggestions?
Suggestions?
Re: '76 Westy
rolling knock. It doesn't do it under acceleration, only when I let off the gas.
Okay, I've never inspected CV joints before. What do I look for?

Re: '76 Westy
Jacked the bus up to put it on jacks stands and inspect my axles and CV joints. Trying to figure out where the clunking sound was coming from. Turns out the left rear lug nuts were dangerously loose, not even snug up to the wheel. I have no idea how that happened.
Tightened them up and no more clunking sound.
Looks like I'll be returning the axles I bought unless somebody else wants to buy them form me.

Re: '76 Westy
Just posted this shot to show ASBug the new tires mounted on my newly painted wheels.
It was just a brake job on Saturday and I'll be working on sewing a new canvas this week.
Re: '76 Westy
Nice progress!! It's really coming along nicely.......
And yeah, loose lugnuts aint no joke..........don't ask how I know.

Re: '76 Westy
You like that? I have 8 yards of yellow canvas at home and once I get the mechanicals in good shape I was gonna get to work sewing a new tent. But hey, if everybody likes the camo version....71_georgia_beetle wrote:I like that camo tent.......it blends in so well.
Re: '76 Westy
A buddy of mine had an early 60s Westfalia when he was growing up. He hasn't seen the bus for decades, but last weekend he found these canvas tarps from it in storage at his mom's house. Since they no longer had the bus he donated them to live on in mine.
Re: '76 Westy
Wow, that's amazing progress...and yes, she looks identical to the find we got...same year, same color, same plaid!

Re: '76 Westy
I am completely pounding my head against the wall right now. ARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!
I took the whole fuel system apart, all the way from the gas tank. I put a piece of hose on each side of the fuel pump and got it to pump gas in and out of a bottle. Then when I hooked everything back together it doesn't work. So I take it off and wire it straight to the battery and it works just fine. But now when I hook it up to the leads again it doesn't pump.
What do you think? A short in the connector or something?
