Re: My '67 Westy
Thanks guys!
Here are some more pics of the work I've done on it. I bought it in August and I've been driving it since October. I spotted this bus over two years ago and had been trying to buy it ever since. Been looking for a split bus for many years.
Some highlights of what's been done:
-Replaced Fuel Tank and Sender
-Cleaned Engine and Tin
-New fuel pump (rebuilt original but it leaked badly)
-New oil cooler seals
-Full tune up
-Rebuilt Carb
-New Fuel lines
-Battery
-Buffed Paint
-Replaced Trans and RGB fluid and put on new boots
-New Brakes all around (soft lines, cylinders, shoes, etc)
-Replaced shocks front and rear
-Replaced many broken, missing or worn parts all over bus (still a lot more to do)
-Front end work (grease, tie rods, repacked wheel bearings, putting in new drag link and steering damper soon)
-Lots more that I can't think of at the moment...
-Lots more to do, enjoying every minute...
Buffing Paint
Worst Rust
Tank had holes in it and solid gas, I put in a new Wolfsburg West tank.
Had to get PO's to cut the OG westy rack out of a tree.
Some CLR massage on the nose:

Re: My '67 Westy
If possible, I'd try to replace your center pin as well when you are under there putting the new drag link on. Those can also cause sloppy steering. I know it helped mine greatly when I replaced it.

It requires a few specialty tools (drift and reamer), but I think you can rent them from a couple of places with a deposit.

Re: My '67 Westy
I thought I would eventually replace it. My steering is feeling pretty tight now even with just new tie rods so I thought a drag link and damper may get it pretty darn close to optimal. My bus has 96,000 miles on it, think that's enough to wear out the center pin? Did you replace the other pins in your front end as well?

Re: My '67 Westy
Yeah, I replaced everything except the steering box. Still has some play in the steering but much much much better! I have no idea how many miles are my bus, so it's easily possible the center pin could have been severely worn out in mine.

Re: My '67 Westy
I cut out the rusty area of the battery tray and "hacked" in a new one. The metal around the tray is good and the the paint on that corner is nice so this seemed like a good solution.

I stripped and painted the roof from the pop top forward, the nose, and the driver's door.

Re: My '67 Westy
Thanks its TowerPaint 1k aerosol paint. It got some with just the paint code and it was off so I sent them my gas door and they matched it. It's really nice paint for a spray can. Maybe not quite as hard as 2k but still good quality.
