I took the engine, trans out as mentioned in the above post. Cleaned all the CV grease from under the body, off the back of the engine and then cleaned the trans real good. What a mess. I thought it was gear oil but it turns out it was CV grease. So I removed the bell housing and nose cone from the trans to look-see inside. The R/P shows no ware at all, all bearings seemed tight and no metal in the oil. I put new gaskets, seals on the trans, cleaned it again, painted it and reinstalled. As far as the CV's I just cleaned the one that was with out grease and re-greased it. When I reinstalled the trans I used Blue Locktite on the CV bolts to keep them tight. I also increased the torque on my wrench to 45ftlbs. I still have the weird noise from the right side, I'm thinking the Torsion bushings are shot and the arm is bumping against the torsion cover. I did jack the Bus up and check the play in the wheels to make sure the nut was tight and the lugs were tight also. The alignment might be off a bit too. That could be contributing to the problem, I never checked it after lowering it. Still he's a great Bus would rather drive it over the Bug, well the Bug is the Super not Geek. That's a different post altogether.

On a side note I had planed on building some brackets so that the Heat controls would operate the flaps in the Heat boxes but guess what? My cables going to the back are frozen. Ha, wtf. I never checked to see if they worked so crap on my part for that one. So at some point this year those need to come out and get freed up. I'm sure some good ole "Water Displacement Formula #40" will work perfect for that. Duh...WD-40!

If it's a "clunk" sound, I'd have to agree with you. Warbird did the same thing. New bushings and it's gone.

Well as you are rolling it pulses with the roll. Like a wheel is bent or out of round. I have rotated the tires so it's not a wheel. It only does it when I steer to the right. I could be going down the road and move from the left to the right lane and it will do it faintly but if you have a good curve to the right it will sound like someone under there tapping with a rubber mallet. When turning right from a dead stop it doesn't do it. But if you are moving, say 20mph or faster it will do it.

Have you noticed it since you messed with the CVs?

Yes still does it. Engine mounts look good too. The bushings are the only thing I could think of that would cause that. When turning right the weight shifts and that side becomes light ans the arm is loose and moves around causing the noise. I wanted to open the trans and see if it was coming from inside but everything look good in there. My Super does something similar also, the CV's were replaced before I got it.

Can't hurt to swap the bushings then.

Problem is I have to break the brake lines open to get the trailing arms off. I hate bleeding brakes but I might have to do that. I have a set of bushings for it. Should have installed them when I lowered it. I need to do the inner arm one also that could be bad as well. Along with the shock. I have some extra shocks. Hum...

I save the plugs that come with the wheel cylinders when they're new and plug the lines and brakes so I don't lose too much fluid. Easier to bleed afterwords.

i have a mighty vac it was 135$ but i wear it out an love it for bleeding brakes makes a 1 man job an will be done in minutes with out a mess or having to pump the peddle

I have the $3 bottle you can buy from any autoparts store and it makes bleeding a one man job too.

I've got all the rear suspension off Moto. I found a loose shock on the right side (cause of the thump thump) and the drum had been rubbing the backing plate(cause of the scrapping sound). Disassembled the bearing housings, took the seals out and looks like the bearings have been replaced at one time. The two bearings are different types (Outer-Roller, Inner- Ball) but they are both FAG brand. Which is the brand that VW installed from the factory. Taking all the parts to work to blast them and clean out the old grease in the bearing housings. Hope to have this bad boy back together by Monday.

Also last Monday while it was storming I left the house in the Bus and water was running across the dash, down the steering support and dripping on the floor. I'm not happy at all about this problem, it was a lot of water. I think the water is entering at the top of the seal then running down the sides, puddling up and running over the metal lip into the cab and then out where ever it can find an exit. The Bugs have holes that this water can run out in the trunk. Wish they had used this method on the Buses also.

Got Moto back together tonight. Drove it and didn't hear anything but I didn't go very far. I hope the new inner bearings will fix this issue with the drum/backing plate scraping. The Bumping noise was a loose shock on the right side.

Ok had a connection with femmie side on Sat and sewed up some curtains for the Bus.









Plan on changing the cover on the seat and rear bed cushion.

When we were down at Tampa(Bulli/Bug Jam) I found two sets of Westy Curtain rods. They need polishing so the curtains will slide easier. I love'em, setting up camp will be much easier.
