1970 Baywindow Bus
I don't think I am an official member of the Aircooled Airheads but I wanted to post my ride anyway!
New to the VW scene, this is my first bus. I have wanted one for a long time and when I found this one I couldnt pass it up. Bought from the original owner on 4.20.08!

Re: 1970 Baywindow Bus
While cleaning out some stuff in the bus, I found a invoice for some work that was done in the late 90's (headers, brake work, oil change/tune up) It had all the owners info, so i thought it would be cool to call and try and get some history.
I called Lester (who sounded to be 100 yrs old) He told me that the bus was purchased by his brother in 1970 and used for local deliveries for his dry cleaning business in Clemson SC. Lester took ownership in the early 80's. (who also lives in Clemson) He said that the bus was great. It was a weekend vehicle for them, they used it to go to the beach, camping and Sunday Drives. All original except they had got it painted before he gave it to his grandson. The grandson soon traded it in, in North Ga, for a "mud truck."
I told him thank you for taking such good care of the bus, and he told that he was glad it was in someones hands that would continue take care of her.
Now Its time for my family to make some of our own history!

Re: 1970 Baywindow Bus
What all did you have to do to run the old plate? Also any one have a 1971 plate they would part ways with?
Re: 1970 Baywindow Bus
I'm afraid 1970 is the last year tag you are allowed to run. For now, 71 and newer are out of luck.

Yes, Sorry 70 is the last year as of right now. I just squeaked in....but to answer your question all you have to do is have a Tag that matches your year, take it to the tag office and fill out paperwork. (no charge $) You have to keep your regular tag with current sticker in your car in case you get stopped.

Re: 1970 Baywindow Bus
Awesome Bus, I am interested in one of those vintage plates for my 67 Bug. I found one on Ebay. It has the letters AT in the middle of the plate just like yours. What are those letters??? I read somewhere else that those letter represent the county? I live in southern GA and I don't wanna buy a plate and then...get my feelings hurt..
Thanks
Thanks

On the old tags, the first number represents the county it was issued in. They are no longer relevant. You can use any number, although it would be cool to find the correct number for your county. I'll try to find and post the link to the info on which number goes to which county.
OK..I found it: http://www.15q.net/gaco.html

Re: 1970 Baywindow Bus
Thanks for the info. I am going to buy it, it has a little of rust color on it but it would go nice with my rust bucket 67.

Re: 1970 Baywindow Bus
I think early bays look quite sexy lowered like that. I hope to have mine done by the end of Feb.
Your blue 70 looks really clean. Great background info.
