Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
How hard should it be to turn my engine over by hand with all new internal parts? I can only turn it by the flywheel with a little grunting or the pulley nut. I used lucas assembly lube on everything except cam lobes and lifters i used molly grease for that. That lucas lube is a little thick and sticky.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Should be easier than that! Did the pins go into the holes of the Bearings? You know the pins on the mains. I'd double check everything again!

Yea the pins are in defiantly in there was really meticulous on that, I have split this case well over 8 or 9 times just being nervous about every little thing, But I think Im going to pull it all apart again even though its sealed up because I have to wait till friday for pushrods, I really do think its the assembly lube i used though that stuff is sticky. I am going to use my break in oil and lube everything with that instead of the lucas. I might just be anxious because its my first build on a vw engine.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Hey man its not the lube. Trust me.
Its either your lifters are too thick or you have pinched your bearings. What kind of lifters did you use and what cam?
Still got to get the other pcs of plastic from you for the motorcycle. Got it running by the way.

Engle 120 and scat lifters, I had steve from proflow match these parts for me. I can turn it with the flywheel and the engine will rock a little then turn, could it be a cam bearing? I had to drill and tap the rear studs for the cam seal an put an insert in there and that might have made that area a little uneven. Oh and I dont have the push rods in yet

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
what kind of cam seal are you speaking of ?
It should be smooth all the way around in rotation.
How did you make sure you didnot pinch the main brgs.
This is the #1 thing 1st timers do. Believe me I have done it and learned a trick.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
I lifeted up on the crank and spun the bearings until I felt them seat then made sure there was no space in between the bearing and the case, I know if i pinched one it wouldnt spin at all it feels the same all the way around just tight. for the cam the rear cup in the front of the engine behind the flywheel is the two studs that seat that bearing pulled out when I was doing an initial torque of 8 ft lbs one of the studs is the one your supposed to tighten first.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Gotcha on the stud. I know the one. that should not make it tight. what stroke are u using?
Steve matched everything for you and did the clearing for you

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
problem solved... not enough end play, I was in the middle of taking it apart again checking everything as i took it off and when the flywheel came off it loosened up real nice, so I have to redo the end play, I'm using an actual end play tool this time instead of a bolt on a feeler gauge tool good thing I dont have to split the case like i thought... well maybe, I dropped a head nut in the push rod tube and listened to it travel on down into the oil pan, but i should be able to fish it out of there with my magnet
Man was i wrong about building a aircooled engine, I thought i would be putting around town by now... brrrnt WRONG

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
OMG, I'm soo glad i read this post!!!
I blew up my motor yesterday, and built one this morning. I am almoist done, but all i got to do is bolt on the turbo and carb, and go. BUT while i was installing one of the pistons, i popped a circlip inside the case. I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT IT TILL I READ YOUR POST, lol. I'm so glad i decided to check this post, before i had to build a third motor, lol.

I accually did drop a circlip in this one earlier on was lucky enough to be able to fish that out with my magnet third times a charm, what compression ratio you going with with that turbo?

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
I was at about 7.5, but this time i decided to go with closer to 8, just to squeeze out a bit more power. Also While i was tearing down the old motor, i discovered i had a bad exhaust leak (the metal gasket had a 1 inch chunk ripped out , now thats some pressure, lol ), and also a bad intake leak at one of the end castings. So I'm expecting to at least have more power, and hopefully better response, and less lag, assuming the spare block i had lying around is any good . I'll prolly be finished 2morrow. we''ll find out then, lol.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Made some major steps today, should be bolting the engine in Wednesday and have Toby on the road this weekend here are some pics of the progress.
Gonna turn this heap into Tobys Muscle
Case all torqued and ready for the P&C's
Cylinders and Eight Teflon buttons waiting
Heads on and torqued
Tin fits after some cutting to fit around the full flow
Just mocking up everything before I fasten it all down
Cant wait to suff this baby in there :Rockit:

Dude, thats clearly an alternator. Everyone knows you can't use a generator belt on an alternatorbumblebuggy wrote:It'll run cooler with a genrator belt.
