Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
I'm new to the bug world just got my new baby on 19July08 and I love it. Havent named her yet but it will come. I used to be majorly into rock-crawling/offroading and just got old, so now im onto what i have always wanted since I can remember, Aircooled! I wish I would have gotten a beetle in the first place.
Enjoy the pics, and feel free to criticize, I'm new to this so I need the hazing j/k just need to pointed in the right direction, im very mechanically inclined so i will not have a problem there.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Was this car on craigslist or in henry county? At least I think it was one or the other. Cool car!
Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
I bout her off of craigslist, paid $3k for it, very nice guy Lamar... he didn't want just anyone to buy it unless they new what they were doing. i sold my 91 muddin burban to get her<=== it is hard to sell a burban at a time like this $160 to fill her up i sold it for $3k . It accually took me a couple of months to get her I gave the guy a deposit to hold her for me and he wrote a contract for 30 days, of course no one wanted the burban at $5500 so I just said screw it I want the bug and dropped the price to $3, and it sold in a few days. I missed the burban... until Lamar delivered the bug the next day, then it was right to work on her. I finished up the wiring and installed my stereo that day.
heres the burban It was a BEAST:

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
I've got suicide doors on my 60 also. I'm interested to see how they accomplished it on your car. Do you mind posting pictures where the doors latch and the hinges are?
Thanks,
Jason

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Looks like a hack job, I will be grinding the heck out of those and cleaning everything up, all I need is time. I might just cut it all out and redo everything when i get the bear claw latches, solenoids, poppers and remotes all together. I havent even touched the doors yet just want to get everything together first.
To support the weight of the door they dont sag so its working
Pass side
Can you post some pics of yours?

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
I used to drive past that car on my way to work. Was a pretty cool looking car but I never stopped to get a closer look.
Looks like the suicide doors are going to need some work. Good news is it cost less than forty bucks to fill it up. With all the money you're saving on gas, you'll have that thing cruisin in no time.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Car looks good and I love the doors (even if they do need some work).
I'm looking forward to seeing it in person on the 16th.
It was nice meeting you and your wife the other day by the way. Thanks for coming out even if the rain
cancelled everything. At least we got a chance to put some faces to names and talk a little.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Depends - you may need to upgrade your engine first. What do you currently have? From the pictures it looks like you my have at leat a 1600 Dual Port.
Sorry I haven't posted the pictures of my suicide doors yet. It has been a busy week. I am working on uploading them now. See them in my discussion for the 1960 Beetle Bagged.

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
The engine is an 1835 with proflow heads, it was built for racing a while back, at least thats what i was told. It is pretty powerful no problem rotiserising those tires I will be rebuilding it before I put any type of boost through it. I figured my 05 gli is a 1.8l turbo, why not make my 59 bug an 1835t

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Ok I did a little rust work yesterday and today I installed my Solo baric L7, I had two in the GLI why not share? also found out when I put my door speakers in I hooked the drivers side up right but the pass side I had hooked to the left rear thats why it sounded funny on certain songs . Note to self "dont hook up radio on beer" it made a world of difference on the tunes. Heres some visuals
It fits and sounds great
The other half of the old box
The box in the GLI
Im not sure if i wanna buy a new fender or just weld that crack, Ill probably weld it, I drilled a hole to stop the crack from spreading, learned that from working on the airframes of F-18s
A few more spots I took care of, not too much it was HUMID yesterday
Heres a little im gonna tackle tomorrow
Just felt like posting my gas pedal, Its pretty cool, anyone know who makes these?
Its not much but I just felt like I had to do some work to her

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Becareful of engine temps with an 1835 in a full bodied car. I'm a former 1835'er- and yes, the rotisserie effect is a blast, but the piston barrells are usually a little thinner than most other sizes and don't handle heat as well. Heat will put stresses on all parts of the engine too. There are preventative things to help keep (oil) temps lower, and you may want to consider some of them- correct timing(!), lower compression ratio, deck lid standoffs, deep sumps, remote oil filters and coolers. Definetly make sure the engine tins and compartment seals are all in place and in good shape. You might want to add an oil temp gauge to help you moniter it too. If you can't touch the dipstick w/o burning your fingers- it's too hot! If you replacing pistons and barrells when you rebuild you might want to go 1776cc in stead.

your bus looks similar to this one, I met this the owner of this bus at the last AA (aircooled addicts) meeting
Thank you for the info Don I did not now that, I do have a deck lid stand off and my oil cooler looks like its a pretty good size, havent tried checking my oil after a drive, Ill have to see if i can burn myself after a drive. I guess a 1776 would be better to handle "some" boost
I'm not going to go cheap on a rebuild chromaly/beefed up everything. Just waiting for military fix my pay, and give me all the money back that they were supposed to be paying me, they are quick to take money away but take forever to pay it back. Now off to the Marietta cruise night, gotta represent the DUB community
Thanks Again
Joe

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
If boost is your plan- then cc's might be the least of your worries. I've looked into the turbo thing a lot, read a lot and have an old racing buddy who builds systems- HVW mag has had some interesting stuff over the years too. As far as reliability- 1600 Dual port is the way to go, and HVW sez slappin' a turbo on that is ok..... the only modification to consider might be (as you already know) good quality parts, and also a turbo appropriate cam. I think I have some back ssues about this stuff.
Have you considered the strenth of your transaxle? Racers and HP street people have always thought this to be the weakest link...... You can gain a lot of that 'fun' with a few different gears. Remember though, if your building a street car- RPM's = cooling = longevity!
(Gee, I don't mean to sound so worrisome, but we all hate to blow things up.... )

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
I plan on doing a ton of reasearch, as far as the transaxle goes I know im gonna need a new one soon, it pops out or fourth gear, so im gonna have to reaserch some on that also. Right now I think im gonna be practical and just save up a good amount of cash and build a seperate engine while I resore the body, the blast booth at my shop should be up and running In a couple weeks, I could use it now but the CO2 sensor is at the calibrations lab and I dont want to pass out in there from afixiation. As for the engine in there now it stays pretty cool, I beat on it all the way to the marrieta crusie night and that dipstick was not hot just warm, so im thinking of getting a dual carb setup like maybe some weber 40 or 44 IDFS for the time being, right now she has A 32/36 progressive. Look at me I havent even had her a month . I really appriciate all the help and pointing me in the right direction

Re: Hello check out my 59 with suicide doors
Found my old push button start switch I took out of my Rock crawler a while back, had a hole to fill in the bug, so why not? Also took a lil vid of my stereo playing some music videos and a little bit of Ancorman. SWEET I threw a rev in there near the end of the vid
Theres the button Don't have a reason for needing I JUST DO
[img][/img]
I decided to do a new vid the old one I noticed had some profanity, The quality is not to good, I'm using my cameras vid capture mode, not too good at picking up sound, also I'm no camera man.
