Alternator to Generator Conversion
Hey everybody I have a Super that currently has a fried Alternator. I happen to have a good Generator and Regulator in storage. I was wondering what would be the draw backs of installing the generator instead of the alternator. And what steps will be involved in doing it.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Alternator to Generator Conversion
i have always wondered about this as well. I would think you might have less amps, but i don't think it would matter in a stock bug, unless you have a loud system, and stuff like that. gotta keep my eye on this one.

Re: Alternator to Generator Conversion
The only things I know for sure are the stand, pulley, VR and belt. Unless you have that stuff you will probably add up more in extras then just replacing the alternator.

Re: Alternator to Generator Conversion
I've got extra generator stands. If you're going to switch James, I'd be glad to trade with you. I need an alternator stand.

Re: Alternator to Generator Conversion
make sure you get the same alt that came out, make sure what you get will work with the reg in your car unless yours has the internal one.Its a pita to replace them so if you have the funds buy a new one, maybe upgrade to higher output if you have a stereo while its being swapped. If your on a budget have Tims or a shop rebuild it. Cheaper than new, and maybe a warranty to boot for way less than a new one. Used is luck of the draw.

Re: Alternator to Generator Conversion
yeah, i know one of the alternators use a three prong connection, and the other uses a 1 prong connection. i had the three prong one in my bug, but it broke, and i was able to use the 1 prong alternator, by breaking off the plastic thing around the alternator connection, and plugint the three prong connection to the 1 prong on the alternator (using the middle connection on the plug).
This is if you have a three prong plug, and happen to find a one prong alternator. here is a pic of how i did it. been running like this for over a year now.

Re: Alternator to Generator Conversion
I would not go with a generator. It is a pain to swap and you will not be happy. If you do, i believe an alternator stand will accept either. But like I said, don't do it unless this is your only ride and you cannot get an alternator right now.

Re: Alternator to Generator Conversion
I will be sticking with the Alternator. Here is a picture of it. Only time will tell if I am to get it repaired or buy another one.

Tims VW Repair of 2660 Clay Rd, Austell, GA. Phone: 770-941-7329. Give him a call first, if its to far to drive, look up a local shop. Quite a few places that can rebuild them.

I used your map But I got lost between Home and the Parts Store. There was a fork at the stop sign, That was not shown on your map.
