gold plate case number? Empty gold plate case number?

I'm looking at buying a beetle today with a 1600 dp. But when I looked at the case number it had a little gold plate over it, almost looked like a feeler gauge. But it had the number and letters stamped on it. Has anyone ever seen this before of heard of it to know why it is like that?

That is a rebuild tag. Some builders put this over the engine number for their own purposes.

Cool. I appreciate it guys. I picked up a 73 super today for really cheap. The car has major rust but the engine ran smooth and the trans was in really nice shape. My only worry was the plate. But thanks for clearing it up
