Air Intake tube freezing? Empty Air Intake tube freezing?

Post by daltondragger73 Fri Jan 02, 2009 6:25 pm

Ok today i took a quick cruise in my bug and 1st gear is running kinda ruff halfway thru spittin and studderin but if i put it to the floor it goes great, i got to the store and opened up the deck lid and noticed that half of my carb. and the intake manifold under the carb was white with ice like real cold to the touch i mean this was within 1 mile from my house, I made a call and a buddy said that his did that and his block ended up freezin??? he had to drop 1700. buck to get it rebuilt, so I made another call and the guy told me I need a preheat hose??? never heard of this, suposivly it goes from the intake to the carb to prevent this "freezing"..

Does any body know what the problem could be, or is this just normal, still cant figure why it runs ruff in 1st gear, the points and every thing are good??? maybe i got some water in there some how??? i dunno, any help is appreciated. THANKS!!!

and any pics of where the "preheat hose goes" would be greatful

Dave...I don't have any pics-but what they're talking about is a pre-heat tube....
Where your intake comes down from your carb and then goes into the heads...there should be a smaller tube coming from the intake that would bolt onto a flange of your exhaust....it uses the heat from the exhaust to prevent the intake from freezing up.....
If I'm right....BUT...I have been wrong before.....

You are experiencing icing. To fix the problem you need to clean the heat risers if they are connected to your exhaust and run a preheater hose. I will look for pics.

Air Intake tube freezing? HeatRiser
He is some suggestions on how to clean it http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=67496&highlight=heat+riser+clean
Air Intake tube freezing? Pre-heat

If you don't have a pick up pipe, put the end of the pre-heat tube on top of the lower tin, so it will draw the hot air that has been warmed by the cylinders/head.
There should be a rubber grommet in the rear tin where the 1" hose goes through, it is missing.

The 1" pre-heat hose attached to the shorter version of the pick-up pipe.
the tin between the pulley and engine is mismatched, btw.

This is the later style pre-heat hose

Ok thats what i was looking for THANKS guys, only thing is i dot have the stock airfilter and not stock exhaust, so the heat tube prob. wont work but i guess im gonna have to take it apart and clean the heat risers and see if that does the trick, and with the link i saw they use a clutch cable on a drill to clean it, guess ill need to find one of those too! fun fun!! maybe because im getting on the road soon ill just park it for now, ive spent enough $$ on it this tour at home to last a while.. I got a bamboo rack today!!! hehehe $25.00 couldnt pass it up, oh well something to do next time. Thanks again!!!!

Sometimes the clutch cable trick does not work. I have had to cut the tubes in order to get them clean, then weld them back up.
Good luck.

don't mean to hijack, but just wondering if dual carbs eliminate icing because the fuel dosen't have to travel as far to the cylinders

My Kadrons were bad about icing up. I had them freeze almost closed one morning trying to get to work. It had just snowed and was cold. But they iced easy anyway. My webers have never frozen

Heating the pre heat risers with a torch and then cooling them quickly with water will cause the carbon to crack and make it easier to get out or just fall out. I have done this amnt times with sucess. Try this if you get the time.
