Rust removal by electrolysis

I am in the process of working on my 66 beetle brakes and decided to try this for rust removal http://antique-engines.com/electrol.asp and I have to say that it works pretty well. Here is a sample pic


I have my pedal cluster and brake pushrod going now,the pushrod was really rusty. I'll post pics later, you can pick up the washing soda at walmart in the laundry isle. It is with the laundry soap additives, in a box as big as a cereal box. It also seems to remove paint as well. It does not strip the paint or rust clean, you will still have to brush it off with a wire brush, that might be because I'm using a smaller battery charger, but it is much eaiser and will be cleaner. I leave mine in over night if I can. Give it a try see if you like it.

I have used the same methods to remove rust from iron Civil War relics I have found (artillery shells, cannon balls, etc.) It works good and will not harm the metal, it just attacks the rust.

Several years ago me and my dad tried this on some old wheels. worked really well. I just kinda forgot about it.

I have been using this method for a little over two years. It works very well. In the summer time if you do not plan on painting the parts rights away a light coat of lps or oil will help to keep flash rust at bay. This method works great for nuts and bolts too!
