generator light
it will come on if i rev high when it comes on ill hold in the clutch and it slowly goes down
then it wont be on for a while then it does the same thing
it will go for a while without it happening but other times it will be constant
do i need to replace the brushes? or is it the regulator or should i just get a 55 amp alt kit?

Re: generator light
I just had to replace the voltage regulator on mine and the generator light never came on. I guess it was above the voltage needed to trip the warning light, but low enough not to keep the battery charged.
New regulator: $30 at AutoZone (Made in USA, too!)
Generator brushes: $5 online
Total install time: 10 minutes

Re: generator light
I just bought the alternator from a parts store and did the under seat wiring per the illustrations on the Samba. Used the original pulley. Got an after market alternator stand. Used oe backing plate and strap. Someone here has probably posted the illustration too. I also upgraded the battery to a 48 series. Narry a problem again. This was on a 1970 Beetle 1500 12 volt system. Probably had $125 in the whole setup + $75 for the battery. $200 will get you rollin.

Re: generator light
I've had good luck with the china alts. The one in my bus is almost 15 years old and the one in my buggy is going on 3. Both 55amp. The bus lights do dim some when I hit the brakes...but that just lets me know my brake lights are working. I run a simple radio (no amps or anything) and, in the winter, I have a heated seat pad that plugs into my lighter. No issues. I think you'll be OK with a 55amp. It'll be better than a gen anyway.

As long as you don't have any big energy drawing plans in the future, I say go for it.

Re: generator light
I was running a 34pict3 and when I switched to an alternator, the accelerator pump linkage just barely cleared, I mean it was REAL close. Fuel pump may be an issue. What type fuel pump do you have currently? You can run both styles with a generator, so it's possible you may already have the "alternator style" fuel pump on there already.

Re: generator light
ehh, well that's one of the old style ones. I'm really not sure on those. I was thinking you likely just had one of the later mushroom style ones. Those are either "level" for a generator. (see how the mushroom top sits level)
Or they are angled to allow room for the bigger alternator. (the one of the left is an old style, the one on the right is an angled alternator style, see how the mushroom top is tilted)
