Type 3 squareback help
I started looking at a few type 3 squareback vehicles to buy but I would like to know which are the differences between years. I know they started on 66, but I see some changes in bumpers and rear lights. If someone could tell me the differences of the year models I would greatly appreciated. Also, what are the more desirable year models.
How about the engine? is it a reliable engine and easy to work with as a beetle. Thanks

Re: Type 3 squareback help
I have a 69 Squareback and while I'm certainly no expert, I'll give you my option. The most desirable years are 70 and earlier. The lights, bumpers, and nose become less attractive after 70. (In my eyes.) The engines are basically the same as a bug, the cooling tin configuration is just different. It is a little more constrictive in the engine bay, but it isn't impossible. Start with a good engine and reliability shouldn't be a problem. Both auto and manual transaxles are good in the type 3.
I can't give you the year by year differences, but if you post on www.athensvwclub.com and ask that question, Pete can tell you more than you'd ever want to know about type 3s.

Re: Type 3 squareback help
Thank you for your post. My bay window is a long project with the air suspension and body work, so I would like to have a daily driver and my always favorite has been the squarebacks. I was concern about the automatic transmission in a VW but I will take your word for it that it runs good. I will contact Pete and get some more answers. I would really like to get a sunroof model but lets see what happens. Thanks again.

Re: Type 3 squareback help
Pete has about 25-30 type 3s, maybe you can talk him out of a good project car.
Re: Type 3 squareback help
Holly crap!!! and I have been looking for weeks in the web, when I could just talk to him. 25-30 type 3's....I think he might be able to part with one.

not only that, but I don't think you own any land yet! and if you are older and own the land, the boss lady might not give you permission to put another VW in it.
