Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
I have had great luck with the Craftsman one from sears. Bought a cheaper one before from harbor freight but was not as good. Its basically a handheld pump with fittings to put on your bleeder. Pump it up and release the bleeder until the pressure is almost gone and repeat until you have solid fluid. My pump still works great just the rubber fittings and hose is getting old and does not seal as well. All I need is new hose and fittings to get it back to working like new again.zabo wrote:how do those one man brake bleeders work? what is a good one to buy? - i think my wifes getting tired of that job.
If you get one go to sears, its about $50 but well worth it over the cheaper ones. Have done many many brake jobs with it as well as hydraulic clutch set-ups. Just when used clean it out after each use. Mine went around to a few friends and it had fluid left in it which softened the lines and fittings.
And mroberts the $50 is a whole lot cheaper than a 13 yo son!!
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
ah so its more of a vacum pump. I think i looked at some other that screwed onto the brake fluid reservoir- so they wouldnt wrk on the '60

I think its been over a year since i've hade a working e-brake in my bug. I can't park on steep hills, or the car will slowly roll back, as the wheels turn the engine . it will roll back a foot, and a few secs later, roll another foot, and so on and so on till its reaches the end of the hill, and it in the middle of the road.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Are you leaving it in a forward gear? I've heard reverse gear is safer to park in....or get a big rock under a tire.

I have never had an e-brake in Toby, well I guess I do, first gear and a 6in hunk of 4x4 pressure treated lumber for those real steep grades

Must be something with the weather as other people are installing E-brakes. I too installed new E-brake cables today. Sure is nice to have E-brakes.

i've been leaving it in first for as long as i can remember. if you leave it in fourth, the car will roll much easier, since one rotation of the wheels, is less then a quarter turn of the motor, so it rolls really easy. In first its won't roll as easily. and i don't like to use reverse for much of anything, since its known to be a weak point in the tranny, and mine just happens to be messed up. my brother popped it into reverse one day and forgot to hit the clutch, and broke a tooth off the reverse gear. so i roll backwards whenever possible, since its been grinding in reverse progressively worse over time, and i want it to last as long as possible.

Very nice ride. One of my favorite VW's, one of these days will have one myself! The puma and sp2 are beautifull machines. Do you know when they quit production on them? I seem to remember one year they redesigned them and moved the headlights below the bumper and it would not meet lumens requirements so they quit production vs re-working them??
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Drove Herbie to Alabama for a show and back yesterday. About 500 miles for the day trip and he just purred like a kitten the whole way. Now we are getting ready to hop in him and head to church.... I love this car
Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?
Split the time yesterday between the 39 and the bug. Got the gas tank for the 39 back from Sims and got the carb kit from Canada so first thing Saturday was putting in the gas tank and rebuilding the carb. The 39 runs great now - drove it around a lot on Saturday and then drove it to church this morning what a blast.
Did do some work on the engine for the bug. Got the jugs and pistons in, heads on and torqued down. Started mocking up the tins as they need a little trimming and adjusting to get them to fit correctly. Running the 1200 block with big bore pistons and dual port heads I'm having to use 1600DP tins and they are a little too big. Also found that the rockers I was hoping to use are 1200 rockers and they won't fit on the 1300 dp heads so the engine isn't going to get much further along until after Christmas when I have some cash to buy new rockers. Hopefully I'll get my tins all done and have everything else ready to go by then.
Here's the latest pic. The tins are just sitting on there after a few modifications, still need to do a few more before they are ready.
