New Guy From Dallas
Hello everyone,
Name is Luke, I'm located in Dallas.
I picked up a 71 Super Beetle awhile back. Traded an ol' rusty 65 Mustang for her.
Shes rust free and pretty straight considering she looks to have been saved from a junkyard sometime ago. Shes my first VW, I've had pretty much just Mustangs otherwise.
Plan is to get her mechanically sound and then toss a paint job on her, figure to go back with the factory orange and two tone the doors white.
Mechanically she seems abit problematic. Years of neglect have finally caught up to her.
But the engine is sitting on my shop floor at the moment, just replacing gaskets and trying to gather original tin pieces as well as heater components. She came chromed out from top to bottom and well... it left alot to be desired and fit was a bit rough.
But hopefully we'll be back on the road shortly and then I can start the bodywork phase.
Look forward to hopefully meeting up with you all once shes up and running.

I love my bug and drive it way more than the mustang, but ironically, I have never been on the side of the road with my '65 Mustang, but it seems whenever the club makes a trip we are on the side of the road for someone's VW breaking down.
Re: New Guy From Dallas
You drive that 65 Mustang every single day? I probably have 30+k on my bus in the last two years on an untested GEX engine. I've broken down once when the bearings went out in my 41 year old RGB. The bus likely would have made it home (and thus not left me on the side of the road) but I chose not to chance ruining the box or axle.
I delivered pizzas in my 32 year old bug for over two years. That car never let me down. Not once.

Thanks for the invites everyone. Really look forward to meeting you all and find out more about VW's as time goes on.
As for the Ford comment...LOL. I'm still a Ford guy. The 65 I traded was a great car, took it to Wisconsin and back a couple times without a single hiccup. It was originally a lil 200 inline 6. Ended up tossing a warmed over 302 in her. Best sleeper I've owned. Only reason I got rid of her was because the cost of doing all the rust repair (leaky cowl 39coupe knows what I'm talking about) out weighed the value of the final project. That and I had two of them anyway and wanted something different. But for the 8 years she was my daily driver.... rarely gave me problems.

I believe that is why they call them "RUSTANGS" I used to own a restoration shop I know what you are saying.

Exactly! No proper metal treatment from the factory doesn't sit well 40+ years later.
VW restoration shop anything in particular?

Yeah - the puddle of water on the passanger floor gets old after a while. I do enjoy the Bug a lot and have a ton of fun driving it after driving a stang for years you will have a blast in the bug.
