Empi HPMX 40's v/s Weber 40 IDF

I have found a set of Empi HPMX 40mm Dual carbs. I'm planning on building a 1776 but I was going to use Weber 40s IDF's.

How tunable are the Empi's, are they junk or are they real close to the Weber IDF's?

The deal is for 2 running and two parts carbs. They are real clean(new) looking and a lot of parts for $350.

Do some research on Empi carbs on the Samba site (search....Empi carbs). The majority think they are junk. If you buy real Webers make sure they are made in Italy or Spain. The quality of the ones made in the USA is down considerbly. I am not an expert. I just go to the dunebuggy section of the Samba site just about everday.

Do the Empi's and take everything you read on The Samba with a grain of salt. I am doing the Empi 44"s and my boss is running the Empi 44"s on is rail that he drag races. I have come across more problems with the Webers than I have the Empi's. We just ordered a set os Weber 44's for a customer and they were JUNK! I had Weber dual 34ICT carbs on my last bug and I hated them. I have seen better quality and easier tunning from the Empi stuff lately. Thats why I chose to use them.

I called EMPI this week before I ordered a set of EMPI HPMX 44's. The carbs are shipped in from China. Before sending them out to distributors, they bolt each and every set to a bench motor and run them. They fix any manufactures defects there and tune them to their bench motor - which means that they should be close but you will still have to tune them to your motor. I went ahead and purchased the EMPI's. Like Gary said - you have to take the reviews with a grain of salt. I've seen bad reviews on the Webers and have also see great reviews on the EMPI's. I've also experience dwhere people say "I heard" they are bad however did not have an experience to share.

4 carbs, 2 running, 2 parts ones and all the parts. Velocity stacks, gaskets, rebuild kits and an assortment of jets.

I'll need to buy intakes and linkage. I'll update if I win!

Alex had issues with the throttle shafts leaking on the empis. He had them on his car for less than a year. I am not saying one way or another as I have no experience with either.

Ahh, the stories I could tell... LOL.
Here is a link to a webpage that shows, in great detail, a rebuild on my brand new EMPI 44HPMX's. These had been test run only, for maybe abour an hour total, on a motor sitting on a garage floor.

http://waitresses.servebeer.com:81/vwpage/

Since that rebuild, I ran them for a few months with reasonable success, until the top of the RH carb came loose on a trip to ATL with Edwin. What a very long day that was!! I am pretty sure that it was the rebuilder's fault, but I haven't run the motor since.

After the incredibly detailed rebuild above, and when the motor (1904cc) was running happy, the carbs were fine IMO. I have the CB hex-bar linkage and manifolds which are a HUGE improvement over the EMPI stuff. Due to the heads I have on that motor, I had to do some manifold porting and the EMPI manifiolds had no room for improvement, they were made for stock ports only.

Hard to say if I actually would recommend them or not... My experiences may have been exactly the same if I had bought new or used Webers, who knows??
