The tires are Nankang 135 R15 72S N-803. I'll be replacing them next spring. I dont like the wheels and I'm probally going to be replacing them with the stock style chrome wheels. 5.5s if I opt for performance tires. I woule really love to do whitewalls on the chrome wheels. However, I have never seen it done before and I am not sure what it will look like on the car.

The rear window was airbrushed. The paint was really warn so I removed it in preparation for an Aircooled Addicts sticker. afro

Thanks Gary - You should see it Saturday. I planned to quickly sandblast the rear drums this evening before putting them back on the car but it was raining when I got home from work. I purchased new brake components all arround for a 100% new brakes on the car. Promlem is the new drums fit too tight and rub on the dust plate and the hub dosent turn at all once I get the axle nut on. The old drums work just fine - turn freely as it should with the axle nut on. Looks like I'll need a small spacer to get the new drums to work. So for now - I am going to clean up the old drums and use them until I resolve the issue with the new drums. I'm really looking forward to getting the car back on the road after sitting in the garage for the last few mionths.

Here are some older pictures over the last few months as I was working on the car:

The picture below is the rear of the car after I removed the engine. You can see the rear airbags and the custom mount in the picture.

Here is my engine on the floor. It was nice to see that the heads were ported and polished.

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_1911

I found receipts with the car that showed and engine rebuild in 2003. I was curious of the condition of the engine and what size it is. The block is a 1967 vintage. Pistons are 85.5mm. So it is basically a 1600 dual port. Rods were still tight and there was very little wear on the cylendars and pistons. Heads and valves were good with the exception of one exhause valve which was too tight. The exhause valve was slighty open when the engine fired which caused alot of carbon build-up around the seat. I've got that adjusted correctly now. The picture below is during the tear-down for inspection.

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_1912

Here I am with my transmission. You can see the mounts for the airbags. I replaced the gaskets, seals, boots, bearings, completly sandblasted it and painted it flat black. I also replaced the nuts with stainless steel nylon lock nuts. I did nothing with the gears since it was working perfect before I pulled it. It went back in with new rubber mounts. It had a offroad mount kit on it that had no rubber. It is nice with the rubber - most of the vibration is gone.

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_1913

This past Saturday my wife and I took the beetle up to the the Aircooled Addicts meet. We were nearly there when we were stranded under the cover of a service station due to the storm. Once things cleared up we headed home. The picture below is what we found - the storm downed a tree over the windshield of my wifes car.

*****

Below is pictures of how the suicide doors were done.

The door handles were relocated towards the front of the doors.

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_2011

The hinges were relocated to the rear of the doors.

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_2012

The door mechanism was moved to the front of the door. Good idead - however, they did not make it adjustable which is a pain.

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_2013

Below are pictures of the hinges that were moved to the rear of the doors. I don't much like how this was done here - like it was never completed or done right in the first place.

Car is looking good. That stinks about you wifes car. Atleast it wasn't the bug though. Thats how I lost my 67 bug, I woke up one morning after a storm to our huge tree in our front yard laying right across the roof.

I have a set of the wheels you are looking for. They are all 5.5 wide, but I'm only asking $180.00 for all including hubcaps. I'll have them at the show at All Around Restos if you (or anyone else) wants to see them.

Here is a picture of a '65 I had back when I was in the Army. I towed it to Atlanta from southern California when I got out an took a job at TBS in the fall of 2000. I sold it locally in the spring of 2001. I sometimes wonder what happend to it or if it still runs around. I put a rebuild transmission and a new 1600 DP engine in it right before I sold it. I love the wheels - I always thought they looked nice. The 5.5s fit the wider performance tires. The car hugged the road really well and handled like a dream.

I wish I would have kept it too. At the time I needed a car for the family and could take a loan because I was buying a house and had a morgage loan pending. I had to get a car without is showing up on the radar. I always figured I'd get another one.

The things I liked most about my old beetle was the pop-out rear windows and the porshe headlights. I'd like to do the same with my current beelte.

My wife and I attended a car show in Hiram this evening - I decided to show my car since it was free. Didn't win but got alot of interest and made alot of smiles. The is the first show my wife and I have attended participating in the show. We realized we need to bring chairs and refreshments next time. We are going to try to make the show in Dallas next weekend. Here she is at the show:

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_2018

This is what won the people's choice award:

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_2019

And this won the Mayor's choice award.

1960 VW Beetle - Bagged 100_2020

There was only one other VW in the show - a 1965 Buggy ownd by Ed. I refered him to the forum so we should see him soon. Here are pictures of his nice car - Kryptonite:

When I said Porshe headlights I was incorrect. When I was trying to find the headlights like I had on my old bug, I found that they are actually Rossi headlights. I found replicas at clip1 and ordered a set. If you look at this months So Cal Imports ad in Hot VWs, there are H4 headlights with a blue LED ring. I ordered a set of those.
