mk2 8 valve problems
i was driving the jetta today and it kept stalling out. with every time i restarted it it was harder to start. and when it did it sounded like it was missing, like it wasnt running on all 4. so im cruising down the road and i just lose power, like i hit a wall. and it wouldnt restart. it turns over fine i have gas and oil and the fuel pump makes noise. what else should i look into?
im getting spark.
but its flooding out. read it could be a bad ecu and i happen to have another and swapped them and it did the same thing.
fuel pressure regulator?

Re: mk2 8 valve problems
I am going to go with ignition module.
My 86 Cabriolet did the same thing.
Died and I got it to start 1 time after that to get me off the interstate. Then NADA....
I hated mine and tore it out and went with a converted points disto and a bosch blue coil like on a beetle engine = problem solved.
Sounds alot like the hall unit going bad in the disto.
Chck all the wires and run all the tests and see if I am right...

Re: mk2 8 valve problems
is it trying to start or just turning over? if its just turning over could be the timing belt broke. i had that problem before.

Re: mk2 8 valve problems
I took the belt cover off of mine, but do as 60 says and make sure that you haven't jumped a tooth or 3 on the belt.
When I got mine it had no power and when I checked the timing it was off by 3 teeth but still ran!
I was told the ECU on my vert was the least likely candidate.
I tried new and used ignition modules, and finally determined it was a bad hall unit in the disto.
The unit cost about as much as everything needed to retro convert back to a '79 rabbit disto, pertronix, and a blue coil.
After that it was just like a bug to work on. ECU was seperate from my ignition circut on that car, 2 seperate systems, as long as the ECU sent power to the coil the ECU was good. Check to see if you have 12 V with the hall effect wire unplugged from the Disto with the switch on. If you do then the ECU is probably not the problem...

Re: mk2 8 valve problems
it will turn over
the oil smells like gas
belt isnt even a year old but i guess it still could have broke.
but i dont hear noise and this car is an interference car
ordered a new blue temp sensor
ill have to look at the hall sensor and see.
i have to look at the injector harness and grounds too
i got it back to the shop on the trailor so if im not at work ill be there until its fixed or burnt to the ground
