swing axle? IRS? 6V? 12v? is it just when you crank it, or all the time while running? how do the teeth look? are allt he bolts tightened down? Once, i didn't line up the D bolt right, and tightened it, and it vibrated till it fell into place and lossened up, causing my starter to make all kinds of funny noises. maybe post a youtube vid of the car making the noise.

true that. It's really sounding like the starter itself, especially if its actually starting the motor. yank the starter out, and have it tested at any autoparts store, and see if it makes the noise on the machine.
