1970 Karmann Ghia
I have been working on getting my sister-in-law's Ghia roadworthy for a while and I am finally making some real progress. Once I have it running and driving I will hand it over to my sis-in-law. She will then be looking for guidance from the Atl Wagens group. As I am too lazy to repost everything here,
please follow the link to the pictures.

Re: 1970 Karmann Ghia
Ok, I have a little more energy today so I'm posting pictures here too.
Here are a few more pics of the progress. Kat came to help sand, prime, seal, and paint her floors.
I still have to turn it over and do the underside.

Yeah, what happen to the good old days when you didn't have to do everything yourself? There are dimples where the hole are to be drilled, but I don't trust them to be in the right spots.Grifspop wrote:Where do the bolts go through to the body?

Yeah, Jon, I'm sorry that I missed the body lift party- but you seem to be knocking this one out!

Re: 1970 Karmann Ghia
I've been pretty slack about workin on the Ghia, so Saturday I'm going to install the shifter bushings, new shocks, shift coupler, and install new cables. If I'm really on a roll I might even paint the front beam.
Re: 1970 Karmann Ghia
Back on the ghia. Beam is off and painting the frame head. Found a spot that needs to be welded on the shock tower. Pictures soon.

Re: 1970 Karmann Ghia
So I've moved the pan inside to work on it. I started on the front beam and was just going to clean and paint it before putting on the new brake hoses.
Well as usually happens with VWs, I found some rust holes. These were in the shock tower, so I pulled the beam and cleaned and painted the frame head while it was exposed.
I took the beam to the car wash and degreased it last night. Now I'll take it to get welded, then I'll finish cleaning and paint it.
While at Bug Jam I got a used shifter for $5.00 (thanks Clyde). I don't have the before picture, but here it is after I finished with it.

Re: 1970 Karmann Ghia
Took the beam to Clyde and he removed the trailing arms so he can install new ball joints. I brought the rest of it home for cleaning and paint.
Painted the backing plates. Cleaned the lug bolts and other nuts and bolts in the vibrating cleaner. (kinda like a rock polisher)

Wire brush in the drill, but many times I will use the tumbler and finish them with the wire brush.
Re: 1970 Karmann Ghia
Trailing arms are ready to go. New ball joints installed thanks to Clyde. I put my son to the task of cleaning the spindles to prepare for painting and then I primed and painted them.

You gotta use the lazy mans rust and paint remover, just wire it up and let it go. It works great. If you build a big enough box you could put the whole front axle assembly in it.
