Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
Need some help......
So I am in the process of breaking down the entire chassis and have run into a snag. I have tried for the last two days to get my rear drivers side wheel off to no avail! I have hit it with a torch, beat on a tire iron with a BFH, hit it with an impact wrench and still have not been able to get it off. Weird thing is, I can't get ANY of the 4 lugs to budge!!! Next up, I guess I will get a breaker bar with a 4' piece of pipe and jump on it for a while. Any thoughts, suggestions or help would be greatly needed. I am going to replace the drums with some five wides, so I will be getting rid of the drums and the rims anyways. Let me know what you think. Thanks!!!

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
If you can bust the axle nut loose, take it off and slide the whole drum/wheels assembly off as one.

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
I have had to use a BIG breaker bar and 4' of pipe on the end and my 250Lbs frame jumping up and down to break a lug nut before.
It'll sound like a .22 cal going off when it breaks loose.
Good luck

Maybe a 6-8' cheater pipe? (Kinda like the "bigger hammer" theory. )
Good luck!

Some time you can tighten it then back it off.

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
I thought about doing that Tim and if all else fails thats what I am going to end up doing. Next up, I am going to try the breaker bar plus a 4' piece of pipe. Hopefully this will do the trick. I actually sell pipe and fittings for a living, so getting that will be easy!!! LOL!

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
Why stop at 4'?
just get an 8' thick sidewall structural pipe and use it.
Leverage is your friend at this point...

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
I guess your right KC. I'll just find something laying around that has enough ID to fit over the breaker bar and see what happens!

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
Yea Grif, I have soaked it every day for the past three days with blaster. Here is what I picked up today at HF and from the shop where I work.
25" Breaker Bar & a 5' piece of 1" XH (.179" wall) pipe! If this doesn't break it lose, I don't think anything will and I will have to try and get the axel nut off and take it off as a complete piece. Will let you know how it goes!

Good luck.
Just remember to hold on to the rain gutter so you do not fall when it pops.
I have that same breaker bar and it has held up well after 3 years.

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
I once had a pulley bolt that would not come out, so finally I put the starting gear lock on the block mounted the block to a HEAVY engine run stand I have and put the same breaker bar and 4' pipe on it. It fliped the engine and run stand over on its side and then I reset and jumped again... After 4 bounces at 250 lbs @ 4' (1000 Ft lbs) It popped. I honestly thought I had broken the bolt off. Someone had used mighty putty on it and what looked like red locktite.fluxcap wrote:Somebody must have put a little mighty putty on those lugs before they installed em. That stuff is da bomb!!!
That was a long day.

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
i had that problem one time, and in my case it had turned out the arm for the parking brake lever on the brake shoe had somehow bent sideways, and rubbed the drum, and actually wore a goove in the drum across all the lug bolts. basically peened them on. when i took the drum off, the only way to get them off was to take a grinder and grind down a little to get all the burrs out, so it would finally let go.
of course someone may have put locktight on them, proly from paranoia of having the wheel fall off or someting. and of course they may also be stripped. on of thwo things will happen with that big ass pipe. either they will break loose, or just plain out break.

Re: Rear Lugs?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I got all 4 of them lose last night!!! I was able to get two of them with just the breaker bar, but the other two were holding their own pretty well. I did not have anyone there to help me and was home alone so I had to be careful enough not to hurt myself while doing it. When I couldn't get the two off with just the breaker, I hooked up the pipe and starting standing. I am about 190 and put all my weight on it and it finally broke lose. Scared the shit out of me when it finally did. It was pretty damn loud. I did land a little funny and twisted my knee a little, but its fine today. After I got them all out, I was shocked to see NO damage on the threads at all!!! I think someone may have read the book wrong and torqued the lugs down like the axle nut is supposed to be!!! Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Next up, pull this tranny and get my ass to work on this chassis to get it done!!!!
