Poker Run May 9 2009
Our annual Poker Run will again be Mother's Day weekend. (Saturday) May 9 is the date. As in the past, we will start and end in Helen GA. Plan to come up on Friday and leave on Sunday for the maximum amount of fun. I believe we will hit our 50 car limit this year. We were at 42 cars last year.
I'll post details as they are worked out. I just wanted to post the date so people could make plans.

Re: Poker Run May 9 2009
Correction, we had 42 but only 41 made it home. Poor ghia.
Jenn and I were poker run virgins last year and as Jon said make a weekend of it. This run is an awesome one. Just can't beat looking in your rear view around the twisty roads of north GA and seeing 40 dubs.
Awesome!

Why only 50? I dont know how it works so that is why I ask. Wanted to make this past years but I had graduation the same day.Hobug wrote:I believe we will hit our 50 car limit this year. We were at 42 cars last year.
Re: Poker Run May 9 2009
We set 50 as a limit for a couple of reasons. There are only 52 cards in a deck so we can do our Poker hands with one deck. (I know there are probably ways around this, but this is how we do it) It is also hard to find interesting stops with parking for 50 cars and it gets tough to keep 50 cars together along the route.
This year, every 5-10 cars there will be a driver that knows the route to minimize people getting lost.

Re: Poker Run May 9 2009
We are finalizing the details and should be ready to start registering people soon. The shirt design is done. The route details will be done by end of day on Sunday. The last stop WILL be Jake's shop. This much we know.
We still need sponsors. Sponsors are listed on the shirts, but we need to have their info soon. Contact Clyde if you are intested. It takes some $$ to put this on and we want to make some money as this year's 'profit' will be going to Jim and Kathee to help with their bills. For those who don't know, Jim and Kathee were in a serious accident with their beetle before Christmas. Jim is still in a wheelchair and neither are able to work. They have not asked us to help. but they are members of our club and they could us as much help as we can give them.

Is there any way to up the limit from 50? I was going to have our club come to this but it sounds like
it is going to be real easy to hit 50 this year.

Re: Poker Run May 9 2009
The problem with upping the limit from 50 is that there are only 52 cards in a deck, so it gets too complicated for our feeble minds to figure out how to do the poker hands with more. Also, and probably a bigger concern, is the logistics of finding stops along the route where we can park 50 cars at one time. We could break into smaller groups, but it is really a thrill to see a long line of VWs winding thru the mountain roads.
The first 50 people to get their registration info and money in will be eligible to win the prizes. The cost is $25.00 if registered before April 15th. After that it is $30.00 if slots remain. Registration fee lets you draw to win prizes and includes an event T-shirt. ( sure to be collectable )
If anyone wishes to follow us, but not actually enter, we have no problem with that, as long as they give first priority for parking to those who are entered.
I'm sure there are many alternatives to the way we do it. This is just what we feel most comfortable with.
Steve and I drove the route today and it is a good one. We haven't figured the mileage yet, but it looks like about 100 miles. We will publish the map in a week or two, but it starts in Helen, goes to Blairsville, then to Hayesville N.C., down to Hiawassee, thru Sautee, and ends in Cleveland at Jake Raby's shop.
To register send your name, shirt size, and money to Clyde Maddox, 536 Cherokee Ridge , Athens, GA 30606.
If you are sending a check, please make it out to Clyde. Additional shirts are available for $10.00 each. Everyone who wishes to draw cards for the prizes must register.

The entry price goes up from $25 to $30 on April 15th. I need money and shirt sizes pronto, so I can order shirts and have sizes that fit all of you.
To register, send your name, shirt size, and a check to:
Clyde Maddox
536 Cherokee Ridge
Athens, GA 30606
Typically everyone gets a prize at the end- Plants, Scat stuff, Club shirts, VW dealership items, stock parts, and whatever anyone wants to contribute.

Re: Poker Run May 9 2009
Well, I've got like 18 cars pre-registered. If we don't have a shirt to fit you, it ain't my fault. I had to guess your size
Once we hit 50 cars, the entry fee is waived, and you're just following along without drawing cards or winning anything. We would appreciate a 5 or 10 dollar donation, though.
This year's run will be around 113-115 miles.
the stops are:
1 Pappy's Riverwalk Restaurant in Blairsville, Ga.
2 Downtown Hayesville, NC.
3 Dairy Queen in Hiawasse, Ga.
4 Old Sautee Store in Sautee, Ga.
5 Raby's Aircooled Technology in Cleveland, Ga.
