coil shorting out Empty coil shorting out

Post by zabo Tue May 24, 2011 9:26 pm

little cross post from the samba but...

So i replaced my generator with a used one hooked everything back up and the car would not start.

Messed around a bit and found if i unscrewed the coil from the shroud and just let it hang the car starts right up. (red lights on tho)
If i ground the coil bracket the car dies.

any ideas why it would be shorting out like this?

thanks

have you tried a new coil? I'm guesing the negative on the coil itself is touching the body of the coil (either inside or out) which in turn is grounding on the shroud. the paint on the coil must have rubbed off, making contact with the bracket.

yep it was the coil, i guess the inside of the coil was touching the case somehow causing it to short out when connected to the shroud.

Does the generator still need to be swapped out?
