Re: My new 72 Bus
You really don't want to know. I worked on it all day Mon. and Tues. I finally fired it up on Tues. afternoon for the first time. I ran it for 25 min. to break it in and all seemed good. Then I had problems getting it to start again. Finally found that my starter was week. Replaced it and I was good again. I checked the valves and reset them. Started it back up and let it run while I dialed in the carbs and set the timing but it got real noisy again. So.. I checked the valves and they were loose again. I had to adjust them again and then it was good. I left about 10:30 last night to head home and it just didn't have the power I was expecting but maybe I was expecting to much. About 10 min. down HWY.78 it started losing power and then knocking real bad. I quickly killed the motor and pulled over. Now I am going to have to tear the motor back down to find out what happened. Untill then I spent today rebuilding my old motor to stock and I am putting it in tomorrow morning. Very disappointing to say the least but that is the way it goes sometimes, especially when your building a "hot rod" motor.Attorney Isaiah Loophole wrote:So....?
Re: My new 72 Bus
Sorry to hear that. Hope you can get it straightened out. Let us know what it is when you find out.

Re: My new 72 Bus
That sucks - make's me very nervous also. I already had similar issues the first time I tried to build my 1200 with the big bore pistons alone, this time I'm going with 1300 DP heads on the 1200 even more to go wrong.
Hope all works out - if I can help in any way let me know.

Re: My new 72 Bus
Thanks guys. It's just one of those thing I guess. I rebuilt the old motor yesterday and put it in this morning. It is running great so at least I am on the road again. Now I just need to find out what went wrong on the other one. I will definately post what I find.
Re: My new 72 Bus
Well the bottom end is trash. It turns out that the stock style lifters couldn't handle the set up. All the lifters except one just completely came apart and all that metal just destroyed the bottom end. It melted a bearing to one of the rods and destroyed the crank and cam. I have to buy all new stuff and start over. This time I will be sure to use the high performance lifters.
Re: My new 72 Bus
Oh man Gary that is terrible!! Do you think it was a clearance issue like I found with mine? I really feel for you!

Re: My new 72 Bus
I don't think it was a clearance problem but I don't know that for sure. I really think that the stock style lifters couldn't handle
the dual valve springs and lift. It's either that or a defect in the product.

Re: My new 72 Bus
Man that sucks.... I don't have anything around the house that would fit your motor to help you restart the build or you could have it. Sorry
Re: My new 72 Bus
Thanks Bryce. I'll get it going again soon. We have another 76 stroke crank
and rods at work so I just need to order the lifters and I think I am going to add
straight cut cam gears this time.
Thanks again for the support.

Re: My new 72 Bus
That's horrible man. It's amazing how such a small part breaking can just completely ruin so much. Sorry that this happened, but you'll get it going soon.

Re: My new 72 Bus
Well the motor has been completely rebuilt and is back in Buster. It is running great and the power is awesome! I did the 31mm lifters with the oil hole and I also added steal straight cut cam gears. They are suprisingly not very loud.
Re: My new 72 Bus
Gary the engine looks awesome. I'm glad you got it up and running.

Thanks! I still want to change the muffler to a ceramic coated single muffler but
I need to save some money up first.

Re: My new 72 Bus
Awesome. I'm glad to see it finished and running good for ya. I haven't done anything on my engine lately. With my 39 chevy at home finally all my extra time has gone to tearing into it to get the brakes and engine in good shape so I can put it on the road again.
Dang it I have to go to the airport Thursday night, I really want to come out and see D's bus and Gary's engine too.
