Wiper motor question

So when I turn on my wipers I can hear the motor running but the wipers don't move. And the motor doesn't sound like it's cycling back and forth. I looked under the dash and the armature isn't moving either.
Suggestions?

lube the little thing that come out of the body thats what i had to do

If im understanding you right, your saying the motor sounds like its moving, but the arm comming off the motor isn't. if this is the case, then there is a small plastic gear inside the housing itself. you can see the round smoothe cylinder part, that is the motor itself, the fat bulky part at the end is where there is a worm gear, and a large round gear it rides on. these gears may be stripped.

Here is what the inside looks like:


the big round gear is plastic and may have stripped out, or broken. the worm gear is metal, so i doubt its stripped.

I can move the armature by hand. It seems like it's something not engaging inside the motor.

yeah, its prolly stripped out then. prolly jsut need a new gear, and you'll be fine. remember to grease the crap out of it, before you reassemble.

mine are the same cept im missing a gromet or something that goes on the drivers wiper arm and the motor. lol

So I took it apart and the gears look just fine. But the metal shaft that is pressed into the plastic gear was loose. I cleaned up up and used a little JB weld to stick it back in place.

ahh. I don't think JB weld is gonna hold tho, but it might. are you sure the gear isn't cracked causing it to be loose on the shaft?

You called it. After letting it dry overnight I installed it and it stripped on the first cycle.
So, Anybody got a bay window wiper assembly that they don't mind me grabbing a part off of?

I savaged another wiper assembly and guess what? It broke in the same spot, too. All different parts from the electrical connection all the way to the arms. Only part I reused was the wiper blades. I even made sure to wet down the windshield before I turned it on.
Suggestions?

I was gonna try to heat up the shaft with a torch and see if I could press it into the gear while hot. maybe that will hold better than the JB weld. Good idea, or not?

doubt it. The only way i thing you'll be able to make that work is to drill a very small hole thru the plastic gear, and metal shaft, and put a very small roll pin, or piece of a small metal nail thru it. perhaps take a drill or drill press, and drill a very small hole thru the side of the gear, as high up, and as close to the face as possible, and drill till you hit the shaft, just enough to mark it. then useing the same drill press, take the gear off, and drill a hole thru the shaft. then you can drill all the way thru the plastic gear, ans shove a roll pin in there.

I got a feeling that metal shaft is prolly hardened, and will be a PITA to drill thru tho.

did it actually crack the gear, or is it just a press fit that came undone? hard to tell from the pic. if its a crack, drill so the holes on either side, are the same distance away from the crack.

Otherwise, try and hunt for a new gear again, lo.

Another thought might be to take a saw, or drill or something, and roughen the crap out of the shaft. i mean really mangle the end. maybe even take a saw and cut a few shallow grooves on the side of the shaft. then take a pick or something and roughen the inside of the gear where the shaft goes into. stab it with the pick, roughen it, etc. once both pieces are rough as hell, take some really strong epoxy, mix it, stick a good bit inside the gear, shove the shaft in, so some epoxy oozes out, and let it dry. the roughtness should create enough "grip" to allow the epoxy to bond to both the gear and metal shaft.

I'll try to drill and pin it. Yes, it is the gear that has split.

I already tried the "really mangle it" method. It didn't work either. And yes the shaft is hardened so it was not easy to even scuff it up.

ahh, gotcha. If you have a drill press, it'll be a lot easier to drill a straight hole thru. otherwise, break out the punh, and hand drill, lol. Hell, if you have a machine shop nearby, see how much they'll want to drill a hole in it.

just make sure you get the hole for the gear as close to the face as possible. that "collor" looks pretty thin, and you'll want as much meat as possible to prevent it from breaking. evenif you have to drill sideways a littleto get the drill bit all the way down the collar.
