need advice please

most of you know i have the rabbit for sale, and my email has been wild since i posted it...

i have a trade offer, guy really wants to trade a 56 standard bus...(i know right?)
but there is a catch, (of course) its rusty and i mean rusty one of the rear corners has completely fell off, needs rocker, doors are pretty ate up...nose is slightly pushed in floors look really solid though, comes with 36hp, flipped spindles. has one back seat, no front seat, has new tailights,new bullets. i love busses, especially earlies, but i dont know bout this one...your thoughts?

Yeah, you sound like you really want a thing. I'd probably hold out for some cash or a trade offer on a thing. Of course I haven't seen the bus. I imagine a 56 bus even rusty to hell has some value to some people. But lets say you got the bus and then decided you didn't want it. I think you'd have a much harder time flipping a bus as rusty as you described then you will have selling your clean rabbit.

I think you would have a better chance of trading the rabbit for a thing than that bus... Your rabbit is fairly priced... I know you put a lot of work in to it, but didn't it start out in similar shape to that bus? Anyhow, your rabbit isn't finished and it's modified, which can make it less desirable to most (not because it is modified, but it is unfinished modified... I for one have done a cabriolet dash swap to a rabbit, and unless it is a European golf they don't just bolt in). To get a Thing you will likely either have to get one that is rough for a trade or offer up your rabbit plus cash. I think *IF* you wanted that bus that you should ask for trade plus cash, otherwise I think you are getting the bad end of the deal and it still isn't what you want.

The convertible top, frame and glass on my Thing was somewhere around $2500, on sale, by itself. Things aren't cheap!

The Bus would take SOOOOO much work to be driveable, it might never be back on the street, and the Rabbit is sooo close....

If the bus could be obtained at a fair price, (probably less than half of what you wanted to get for your car), it would be a good project, albiet, a challenging project. Press bumper busses are getting harder to find these days, as is any split window bus. If the guy won't be reasonable on the price or you don't want a potental long-term, and expensive project, I would pass on it. (If he does set a decent price and you are not up for the project, pass it on to someone who is).

DiggerD- you wouldn't happen to be interested in the bus would you?

i'll ask him if he is interested in selling it, if i decide to definitely pass it up.

Depending on a closer inspection, and the right price, I might be interested. If not, I know of several people that may be interested in a project like that. I just say, pass it on to others in the VW community if you don't want it, it would be a shame for it to get sent to the crusher for scrap.

If that is the same bus in the pic above, I would deffinately be interested. Find out what he would take for it, please.

i wouldn't touch the bus cosmetically just slam the crap out of it and drive the thing.

That bus was for sale on the samba a while back for 2000-3000 dollars, cant remeber for sure. Came out of a chicken house in NC I believe. There were a few buses in that coop that have all sold. I meet a guy at CTS that bought one, a 1960 panel.

I think he edited it recently. When I saw it this morning around 9am, I could of sworn it was $2500???

It will need to get alot cheaper than that for me to be interested.......that roof will take some major $$ and skillz to get right. I thought it was a local bus, but it appears to be in Fla?
