P/C and head swap
i need to change pistons and cylinders and heads on my 1600.when i do that,i would like to have new pushrod tube seals.exhaust gaskets, intake gaskets and front crank seal.is there a place
anywhere near the southside that may have that stuff?does anyone know if advance,or napa may be able to get them,of decent quality? i dont really want to order online,or go to forest park.

Re: P/C and head swap
Your best place to get that would probably be Stockornaut or Herrells bug parts and just have them ship it to you. Either should have it to you by the next day. Most of the stuff you're looking for will probably come in an engine seal kit.

Re: P/C and head swap
IAS in forest park is where i got everything to swap over my heads and pistons and cylinders. they had pretty much everything in stock. its best to call ahead first so if they don't have something, they can usually get it the next day or even the same day from their warehouse.
but they don't ship, so do as glenn said.
I work at advance auto, and i wouldn't recommend shopping there, or napa, for VW parts like that. One, because it's much morw expensive, and second, is that the quality sucks.
good luck

Re: P/C and head swap
thanks bugman.i had a feeling that the local chain stores would be a waste of time.i'm going to try one of the places
that glenn suggested.i wont do business at IAS.i'll leave it at that.there used to be a place here in griffin (coates),they dont mess with aircooled
stuff anymore.wish they did.

Re: P/C and head swap
I've also had good luck with cbperformance, and cip1. good places to buy stuff. and they usually have everything in-stock. next day shipping is usually a lot, but i've never been in that much of a rush for the parts, and will usually just wait the 3-5 days for ground shipping. When i made a large order from cbperformance, it got here in 3 days. it arrived in a huge box, with everything packed really well. just another option

Re: P/C and head swap
There is always Clyde at Athens German Aircooled here in Athens. He will ship stuff out ASAP and his prices rival those of the on-line vendors. You can reach him at 706 206 6327. He doesn't toot his own horn much, but he is a good guy to deal with.

I agree with either Stockornaut or Clyde.
Re: P/C and head swap
85.5 Mahle P&C set is $145.00
Rings only are $22.00 or $21.00 (they're at home and I don't have everything memorized)
New stock DP heads are $225.00 each
1300-1600 German engine gasket set with flywheel seal $15.00
Add 7% Ga. tax if you can't meet me at an out of state car show.
