Starting the design and gathering of the components for the stereo in the yellow German Look. I would like to have your ideas on head units, speakers (brand), sizes, amps, etc. If you have any pictures post them as well.

I have am Infinity bass link, great sound and pretty complete unit in a small package. Have had bass tubes in the past but really really like this sub!

The best sounding Beetle system that I ever heard had kick panel speakers (seperates with mid range and tweeter) up front, and a sealed box with a 10"sub behind the rear seat. He was running a single amp powering the whole system. What you might want to consider is the size of your alternator or generator, and the current draw of the amp. I've seen multi-amp systems that draw 70 + amps running off a car with a 55 amp alternator (what are you going to run the ignition, lights and wipers off when the stereo is thumpin'?)

Ok Here you go for a nice system. I don't know if you ever heard my stereo but I got a Sony head unit with3-10in subs, then I got two amps(1 for subs 2000watts & 1 for mids and tweeters 1000watts) kick panels in front with two super tweeters and mids. Then in rear two more tweeters.it also has to do with your box to. I usually don't enter the set shows but I can give them a good run for the money. If you want a great set up I can hook you up. Let me no what's the budget and you can go from there. If you want to hear what it sounds like remind me at the next get together. : affraid

Is any of this going to be possible with a generator ? Or will I need to convert to an Alt?

yes your going to need an alternator 55amp is ok but I'm running alot of other stuff so 75amp covers me ok. I don't think a generator could handle all that stuff but I could be wrong but I won't chance it lol!!!

Best to convert to an alt to have any system. You can upgrade to a higer output gen, but if your going to do that might as well upgrade to a decent battery and an alternator. I think I had a 70amp alt in my bus running my system, with a 4x50 kenwood head unit, the bass link, and 4 6.5 kickers had great sound with minimal draw. I have had around 4500 watts in my 71 bug (4 15' kickers, 6-8" and 6 tweets) running, but kept burning up the gen and batterys so fabbed a bracket and used an a/c pulley to run a seperate alt and battery for the stereo, and kept the gen in for the car. I swear I could fell the alt pulling after that, but it worked and only had to replace one side glass with plexi!!! Very Happy

i had 2 12's behind the backseat in my bug, and 2 6's up front. 12's were 600 watts each, tied to a 1200 watt amp. and the 6's were 150 watts each, tied to a 280 watt amp. I had the 1200watt amp connected to the left side of a kenwood head unit, and the 280watt amp tied to the right, so i could adjust it better. i had the 1200 watt amp set to mid, and it was still thumpin. and the 280 watt amp set to high. worked amazingly well. very nice balence throughout the car. it was still a tad bit on the bass side. but a set of tweeters would fix that no problem.

but if you want it to thump, just a turn of the knob, and every car alarm within a 300 foot radius would go off Twisted Evil . i had it on a stock genny, and no problems.

I was actually considering running a gm 1 wire alt on my bug. they are pretty cheap even for the 100 amp alternators. i was gonna use a dealer installed air conditioning pulley to run the second belt for it. just a random thought i had one day, lol.

As i was reading the post I was thinking the same thing with the ac pulley and the GM alt. I was also thinking you could put in a second battery (marine type) and trickle charger and just plug it in every night to recharge the battery.

I ran a GM140 amp alternator on my bug and i am running one on my wifes Squareback also. they work great at a third of the cost of a VW 95amp. i mounted mine to the left of the carb and gutted the ol generator, it's only purpose was to spin the fan.

It's better to use MDF for the sub enclosure, it dampens any secondary resonances
