I have worked on it some today. Went to the paint store and got a gallon of Blk. I need to paint the hood and deck lid along with the OG left rear fender. I worked the fender some more with my hammers and dollies. It is really nice and smooth. It needed some filler on it, the filler is kind of old so it didn't start drying at first. It got a little late and I'm tired, so I'll check it in the morn and see if I can sand it. It is nice having the tools to do this kind of work. I bought all the tools when O'Bugga was being built and now I have them for my other projects. I'm lucky that my brother-in-law bought a small Mig Welder, I had to weld up some rolled edges that had split. Welding those splits makes the fender that much stiffer/stronger.

Well more progress today. It's chili out so paint don't dry very fast.

From yesterdays progress....
No matter how good you are with a Dolly and hammer you will need filler.

And today's progress....
'64 Sunroof "Geek" - Page 7 Progress003

'64 Sunroof "Geek" - Page 7 Progress004

I used my paint rack that was built to paint fenders for O'Bugga and I 've used it a good bit for just spray painting suspension parts.

Now the good stuff....
Primer

Yeah didn't get a pic of the after sanding. But it was sanded with 400grt.

And then Color.....

Ok, starting the tear down of Geek on 9/29/12. I've been planning on getting to this for a while but the Bus got in it's way so... If any of you guys want to come over and turn some wrenches come on. I should be out in the drive with coffee around 8:30/9am. You'll have to bring your own doughnuts. Objective is to have body separated from pan and then trans, engine and beam separated from pan. I have parts to deliver to customers.

I'm going to try and document the tear down and then the rebuild over the next several months. I'm making some changes to Geek but you'll have to wait for the finished project to see them. Some cosmetic and some mechanical.

Dang dude, we're gonna be in Senoia most of the day or else I'd come by to help. If we head out from the show at a decent time, I'll try to stop by. But at the pace you work, you'll likely have it stripped, blasted and repainted by the time I'm heading that way.

Worked on Geek today. Removed popouts, rear window, windshield, vent windows, gutted the doors and sunroof. Bagged and labeled all the fasteners. I need to remove the doors, hood and deck lid so it will be a little lighter to get it down and in the barn. So far no visit from the Code enforcer! Not going to press my luck.

Starting back to work on Geek. Got the body and pan in my shop, it has a steep ramp so it's not like you just roll it in and out at will. I wish! Got the doors off what a pain.

I'm in the process of mocking up the front suspension and I need some info. I'm thinking I need to add drop spindles to this set up but I don't have any on hand. I would like to go with disk/drop spindles but it's just not in the budget right now. May add them at a later date. I'm mocking up the beam to see how narrow it needs to be. I don't like the sunk in wheel look/no turn radius but it does need to be a tad narrower than stock to drop the front. I'm after a decent ride, O'Bugga had a decent ride and it had a narrowed beam w/shock towers. Ok said all that to ask if drop spindles, disk or drum add any, any width to the track. I've read conflicting opinions on the Samba. I would like to hear from some of you guys that have used them and see which ones are ok and which ones will add to the track. I need measurements to factor into the beam width for right now. If I never add drop spindles then the amount I took out will not matter. I would rather be set up to run them just in case.

Does anyone have a set I could barrow for this mock up? Anyone have a set of drum drop spindles to sell?

On another note I have the body down on the pan and I have to move the rear wheel well mount before I can sit the body fully on the pan. I have a set of BRMs and the rears are 6.5" and this IRS suspension looks like it is going to cause a problem with these wide rims and the fenders. I'll have to lower the suspension and remove the mount to get everything lined up and measured. Lots to do to get onto the rust issues and paint.

Hey Bob... my understanding is that dropped spindles alone do not add any width to the track... disk brakes however, DO. Also, because you are running BRM's... it is my understanding that to get the front end down... you will have to narrow it at least 2 inches total. I don't know this for a fact... just what I have read.

How wide and what is the offset of the BRMs? When you figure that out then add about an inch for the discs. That should give a basis to start with for figuring where you want your wheel to set in the fender. The rag top I had had a 2 inch narrowed beam with drum brakes and 5 inch wide 5 spoke Empis. Oh yeah the tires were 145/65R15s.
