speedometer question Empty speedometer question

Post by panic_fan Tue Aug 19, 2008 7:34 pm

I just replaced my speedo with one bought in classifieds on the samba.
My original worked fine.. until while repairing the glass I broke the needle. So I bought this one, hooked up, seems to work until I hit 25-30 and then it pegs out and sounds like its grinding. Almost sounds like the gears are stripped or something? A lil grease coming out of the cable, is that ok? Do I need to grease more? I saw a couple of post on TheSamba, but they were about Cold weather issues.

thanks

I had one that did that a while back and the gears were bad. I would just take the needle off of the one you just bought and put it on your original one.

Yea, that was my next step. It just looks so delicate and brittle. But I might give it a try.
Thanks

They are very easy to break. What I do is use a fork. Slide the fork under the needle and then pull straight up. It will pop right off.

Cool. Thanks for the suggestion. I just glanced at it last night, I was hoping that it would snap off or something easy. I may try to tackle tonight, so I will keep you updated.

Well, I tried replacing needle from new to old but no luck, it was a PITA to try and get that needle off? I emailed the guy I bought it from, he is sending me another one that is tested for the $4 shipping charge. Not bad I guess. (*bonus this new one will have the tenths/mile*)

Just got finished installing the new gauge in the bus. It was in good shape and looks good to go. We will give it a test run as soon as it stops raining! Pretty crazy because the new reads exactly half of what the original one showed.
