Hey Im Richard a Noob hear but not new to V-dubs I have 1965 Type 1 Transporter(bus) The engine is 4 years old on a rebuild. Original Block 1400cc rebult to 1600cc single port. Coming back from Florida last month threw a rod- From the sound of it -Im not a certified mechanic. I had it towed back to my house in Decatur and will sit till spring(tax return time) till I have time to find a worthy Mechanic. I Use a Mechanic from ARS out of Forrest Park(Jason) who is a good Mechanic. I feel though it never hurts to get a second opinion. Im not wanting to be skimppy on it and am willing to spend up to 2K to have it done right. This is a nice bus and never would part with her. She's garadge kept while my GTI sits in the drivway. If any of you know or are a good mechanic please let me know. Richard 404-484-6372 rich65vwbus@yahoo.com
Thanks for your cosideration peace Rich-B

A set of wrenches, a manual, and some motivation is all you need.

If you have a driveway, you have the space. Engine swap is basically four bolts and a couple wires. It'll take an hour or less to pull it. Then you can take it to Proflow in Hiram. They do the best VW machine work in town.

I am to pleased with Jason he knows his Dubs. I REFUSE to Go to Bobby at Advanced in Avondale. He's overpriced for shotty work Mad I'm all familiar with droping the engine I did it last year converting it from 6 volt to 12. I couln't find a replacement generator and got tired of no tunes in Scarlett. so Im kicking around Idea's glad for the input come spring time if I dont get it towed to IAS a Case of Sweetwater for whoever whants to help me drop the engine. I use to be a Brewer there!

Sounds good Mike I've been on the wagon myself for 4 years but dont knock those who endulge. will play this by ear just geeting my feet wet before I jump in. I figured the only way to get known is just to "shout out" and hear responses. Im kind of bumd out with her just sitting there but she WILL run again.

are you sure its a rod? what exactly happened? did a rod actually break thru the block? does it still turn over normally (and if so any noises, i.e. grinding, clunking, etc.)? did ya pull the plugs to see what they look like (i.e. damage)?

I haven't investigated it yet. It was humming along and suddenly started going bap bap bap bap bap real lowd with loss of power. I was forced to pull over. It will turn over but not start. Havn't check plugs I know it sounded God awful not good. I see no Rod but oil coming out.

The reason I said that was because one of the bus guys pulled his engine thinking it needed a rebuild, and found a broken rocker arm. What a relief that was that he didn't have to go completely through the engine

drain the oil, and see if any chunks or metal flakes come out. Don't keep trying to start the motor, as that knocking sound could be damaging other parts that may still be good. for example, if its a rod bearing, the crank MAY still be good, may just need a turning. but if it is a bearing, trying to start it, with damage it further.

thats a good sign then. that atleast means the rod bearing didn't crap out, and i'm guessing you didn't blow a rod either. there'd be lots of metal if you blew a rod. maybe your crank cracked. i once saw a motor with a bad knock, turns out the crank shaft had cracked in two. or maybe a main web cracked. i bought a 40 hp motor froma buddy really cheap. said it had a knock. when i tore it open, a huge chunk of the main web, along with the big case half stud came out Laughing , but anything is just pure speculation untill the motor comes out. Hell, it might just be as simple as the flywheel came loose or something. all you need is a floor jack, a 17mm wrench, and a few other misc hand tools, and the motor will come out. i just yanked the motor out of my 74 super yesterday. took me about 15 minutes, lol.

Sounds Good Got the floor Jack 17 mm even got a furniture dolly to wheel it out on. I have a real tight garadge where its stored with no room to work on it so will put on back burner till spring tax return time. Im going to swap out the gas tank for a new one I was constantly changing fuel filter because of sedament from old tank. Its funny the money we put into our toys it was going to be a Supercharger for the GTI before this happened. Its all good though she's worth it.
