flower Can anyone tell me a good place to get used or new heads for a 1971 superbeetle convertible, and how much they might cost? The guy that I bought the beetle from has 2 used heads, but when he took them to Coates Foreign Cars in Griffin, they wanted him to have the heads re-worked, because they weren't sure how many miles they had on them. He's in the process of doing that, but I just wanted to be prepared in case they weren't good.

I don't know anything about motors, or cars for that matter, I've just always wanted a convertible bug, and found this one on Craigs list. I hope I haven't bought a money pit. affraid I'm banking on my husband taking over the guy part, working under the hood, while I do the girl part, drining with the top back Rolling Eyes

Money pit? It's all in the maintenance. Sure you can have underlying problems from a previous owners lack of care and maintenance but most of those will come to light as you, or husband, performs these routine tasks. Oil, tuning, fuel filter, lube and suspension are the major items to monitor. Buy your husband the John Muir "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot". With a few tools, this forum, TheSamba.com and that book you will be fine. Most important thing.................DRIVE IT!

Good luck and we'll see you on the road.

Muirs Idiot guide is a good book, but try and find an early version, in your case 75/76 down printing. The laters covered a wide variety of models and engines and were a bit harder on the read. Bently books are good if your a mechanic! A bit tough on a novice to read.
For all that ails, the Muir is good, even a haynes will do. But if your working on your engine there is a book called "How to rebuild your VOLKSWAGEN Engine" "Air cooled engine" By Tom Wilson, put out by HPBooks. It has a red cover and a picture of a long block on it. Much more detailed and easy to read (aka: lots of pics!) More detailed than most, just watch out for pg 134 in the installing heads section. It states that final tourqe is 28 lbs. No no no, 23 lbs is tops! They might have changed it but never go over 25lbs on the heads.

Oh yeah, hopefully your top is in good shape. That is the money in a VW. Like an old ad said, "Our most expensive option is a hole in the roof"!!! New top is not cheap, or at least not done right. Mechanics you can grab the right manual and tell your husband to go do laundry and dishes you will take care of putting the heads on.....

Thanks for the replies. The top was redone about 3 years ago, but I think there might be a slight problem with it. The support that is located just in front of the back window looks like it might be warped. The precious owner had a little trouble getting it to latch, but was eventually able to make it happen.

I really jumped in way too fast, but it was a life-long dream, and the price was the lowest I had ever seen, and the first chance I'd had to be able to afford one.

Mike, I might need another set. Please e-mail me @ jennyzoo2002@hotmail.com and let me know what you want for them. Also, if they're ready to be installed, (reworked?). Would you recommend Coates, or should I bring it to LaGrange? We've got a Franks Bug shop here also, and I've heard he was really good, but expensive.

We are 100% bug-illiterate, so all of the suggestions we get are very much appreciated!!!
