New from Decatur, GA

Hello there.  I'm Eric from Decatur... my first car was a 1963 VW bug that I bought in 1983.  Soon after, I was bitten by the Karmann Ghia "bug" and bought a 1972 orange Ghia in 1984.  It was pretty beat up so, in the late 80's I found a 1962 body in the VW graveyard out in Conyers (no longer there as far as I can tell) and swapped bodies.  When I got the body on the 72 pan I noticed that the back end had been widened to accommodate larger wheels.  After that, it was anything goes, so I decided to turn it into a Ghia roadster (blasphemy to some, I know)... removing the roof and putting on a fiberglass flip-front-end.  It has then sat at various houses over the years until a few weekends ago when a friend of mine invited me to keep it, and work on it, in his garage.  So now I'm 30 years removed from the VW scene and amazed that Hot VWs magazine is still around (just subscribed) and that many of the companies where I purchased parts in the 80s are also still kicking.  It feels good to tinker again so I am currently re-wiring with a dune buggy wiring harness and replacing the brakes (rusted up over the years) so that I can get it to start and stop before putting in an engine.  One thing that HAS changed over the years is the price of engines... I figure I will start with a 1600 until I can go bigger some other time in the future.
