Help please 78 transporter.
So I bought a 78 transporter this past weekend. New plugs n wires new fuel pump n filter new air filter. When I turn the key it fires over BUT it seems as if the gas peddle doesn't effect the way it runs? It won't idle but for a min tops. I can pump the gas and nothing. Still had the old injectors also.
The thicker black hose which I assume is something to do with the brake boost that runs into the intake makes it run better if it's not into the intake. Still though it won't idle and the throttle doesn't have any effect. What else should I check? Thanks guys in advance. New to the fuel injected motor have experience on my 1600 in my baja though.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
x2, on fuel injection, the pedal only controls how much air the engine gets, the ecu then calculates how much fuel to shoot in. If you have a vacuum leak, the ECU is fooled into starving the engine.
edit; if pulling the brake booster (and plugging the hole) helps the engine to idle, that means the booster is shot and will need to be rebuilt.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
Hmm Ill check again. Though I didnt see any noticable hoses off or hear any leaks. Could it also be fuel pressure regulator? The fuel pump and filter that I took off was gummed up something bad from years of sitting.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
Ryne,
There are lots of annoyances with a FI set up that needs to be resurrected.
Check to make sure that ALL the vacuum lines are on.
This includes checking the large snorkle after the FI flap (black Box).
If they are cracked (on bottom on back), you will have un-metered air getting in the system.
The injectors and seals are likely toast.
At a minimum you will need new seals.
If you can find them some of the FLAPS sold replacement injectors a few years ago and I never had any issues with them.
There are online places that will rebuild your Bosch ones though and that is the best option.
With out having seen it, but based off my experience you probably have a combination of some of these:
a stuck air meter flap (black box), or a worn our resistance meter strip in the top of the black box, plugged 1 or more injectors, and rotten seals on the injectors. The fact that it idles for a minute or so tells me that probably you only have the 5th injector (cold start) working. You need to check the injectors for signal at wires when you are cranking the engine over...
Welcome to the 6 months of hell where you get to do all the preventative maintenace for the past decade that was not done.
Once you get done you will have a smooth running, easy starting bus. Until then you will yell and curse at the oddly designed system.
Get a bently manual if you do not have one. they are the best at describing the needed repairs.
PM me a phone number and I will call you and help you work through what I know about doing this. I have had 5 late bays and none of them has ever been converted to a carb. I was able to salvage the FI on all of them.
Be patient and just know you will get this all worked out.
I have a few FI bus parts left in the shed.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
You could but you wouldn't be able to go back to type 4 unless you replace the tranny. I've got the same year van. Unfortunately all of my FI was gone and replaced with a weber.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
The engine will fit the bus tranny but you have to cut the input shaft. Once you do that the type 4 engine won't work anymore. I don't think the beetle tranny will fit.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
Not worth swapping transmissions and engines. That 1600 will barely be enough power for it.
Re: Help please 78 transporter.
I didnt think so just an idea lol. So today after work ill take the injectors off (ordered some new o rings with my fuel pump). I have to run some fresh gas line on them anyhow they are dried up a good bit. Ill check that booster line see if that trick AS said works or not see if thats bad. The mass air flow sensor..im assuming thats the metal looking bosh thing between the air filter and throttle body did open and stuff last night we checked that. Also cleaned the throttle body which it dint look bad considering.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
After sitting for long periods fuel injectors will look like your tank fuel pump and fuel filter. Best to replace all fuel related components and clean tank well. The price of fuel injection

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
Oh yeah understandably. And the way the fuel pump was gummed up everything im sure is. What about this cold start valve or the aar or afm? Should I pull those and clean them? Im going to have to get a book lol.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
So today I came home pulled all the injectors replaced te fuel lines to them. Pulled the pressure regulator and the cold idle. Cleaned everything good. Found that's the metal hose from te pressure regulator to the tank was so gummed up you couldn't even spray cleaner through it. Got everything back on and she fired right up! Drives through te gears perfect. Butttt won't idle but barely and dies when you stop. How do I adjust the idle on these fi systems?

Don't Adjust idle /injectors are not spraying correctly if it won't idle

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
Thanks guys! Re checked a few vacuum lines and some were not on. Now it idles fine. Stops suddenly and idles fine. Feels like it has power through the gears though it's by no means fast but I didn't expect it be. I think the timing is off just a touch though. Otherwise it drove fine through town I took it out a few times today.

Okkkk. New issue is very bad stuttering or jerking in 1st and 2nd. Seems like the lower the rpm the worse. Runs good other than that. Any ideas?

What is your fuel pressure? You're looking for about 35psi.

Re: Help please 78 transporter.
33. I checked the afm and it looks clean no wear tracks. Also it will crank but die instantly if I'm not on the throttle. I did read a guy on samba had all these issues and the elec dizzy was bad. May swap my new one from my baja to check that.
