New to the VW world/Bought a 65'
I am new to the VW world and I probably spent too much on the car to begin with. Got about 30 minutes from the guys house and the car started to loose power. Had to pull over and there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I let it sit for a few minutes and then tried starting it again. It had a weird sound so I called for a tow. Got it home and the starter sounded like it was going bad so i pulled it. Only one bolt was holding it on and the wires were barely holding on. I tried to turn the crank and it wouldn't budge. So tonight we will be pulling the motor to see whats going on. Wish me luck, I will be getting some photos up soon.
Located in Locust Grove if anyone wants to come help out lol
As it set before I bought it

Can't make it out tonight, but good luck with it! I'm guessing the top starter bolt was missing. That bolt holds both the starter and the engine to the transmission. It's got a D shaped head to keep it from spinning when you are installing the nut on it. If it was that bolt, the good news is you'll have one less bolt to remove when dropping the engine!
Sorry you had so much trouble on it's maiden voyage. If that engine is toast, you can buy a new one from a reputable place and atleast have comfort knowing it's a fresh build, and not a timebomb.

Whats a decent price on a good engine, possible turnkey engine?
Re: New to the VW world/Bought a 65'
Pull the motor out tonight, had some shaft play in the transmission. Started to pulling the firewall insulation out and found a snake skin from a copper head behind it leading into the car....... yea I hate snakes.

Awesome! Glad you got it out. better a snake skin, than the actual snake. A little play in the input shaft is normal, so as long as it wasn't flopping around like crazy, that is probably ok.
