Timing a 009

Ok this maybe a dumb question but I just read something over at Aircooled.net. I thought that a 009 distributor was timed at 30degs TDC @ 3000-3500 rpm. They had it a BTDC. Is that Before Top Dead Center? If so my cars timing is way to advanced! I'm at 30 -32deg ATDC. I'll have to check it tomorrow.

You are 30-32 degrees full advanced? That should be BTDC.

You probably have it timed right, but just have your ATDC and BTDC's reversed in your head. I would think if it were really timed that far off it would run like total crap if it even ran at all, and it sounded like it was running pretty darn good yesterday. When sitting behind the car looking at the pulley (with the pulley at TDC), 30BTDC would be at about 1 o'clock.

I printed this off and used it to mark my pulley.

Just went out and looked, I was thinking wrong. The timing is BTDC. I jumped the gun on the post should of confirmed first. I did adjust the gap on the points though, they were a little light.

Eric did you notice the engine movement on some of those starts. It had bad chatter at times. I think the case is leaking oil from between the two halves, I replaced the seal and it still leaks real bad.

I really didn't notice much shaking at all, and since Kelly and I were eagerly awaiting each backfire , we were watching the muffler pretty good. Was your oil low when you got home? Mine seems like it drips a good bit of oil, but the level on the dipstick is always good

HA HA, nothing more embarrassing than having a car that backfires! Sometimes its real bad, I guess the header gets hot and it does it more. Running Premium has helped it a little.

I will fix that crappy header soon!

I like my back fire but mine is on demand. I use it for teenage tailgaters. Back off gas, turn off ignition and switch it back on with the pedal depressed and BAM! Somebody is shittin' their pants.

Ha!! That takes me back.........in high school I had an El Camino that I did that with! Great for scaring old people,dogs, etc.........

My bug used to backfire but only when I let off the gas with it in gear. It was great for clearing the road of deer when I was driving to work.
