valves and timing Empty valves and timing

why is it in about the last year just about every air cooled vw that pulls up at the shop and says its not running good its out of time and the valves are way out of wack and they say well I set it all by the book

For some people, they only know that there is a notch on the pulley. Normally this is not tdc and they also don't realize just because it says tdc that it doesn't mean its on number one cylinder.

Yeah- there are a bunch of different pulleys out there- if you don't know what the notches are, you're going to be in trouble
