Newby in Mcdonough.
Hello everyone, My brother-in-law Brad, his Father, and I have reciently thrown ourselves in the ACVW life . We've been fans for a long time and finaly pulled the trigger and bought some. I have enjoyed car clubs and online forums before. Im really looking forward to meeting some of you and tapping into your wealth of knowledge. We are going to be learning as we go and Brad and I are determined to do the work ourselves. We bought a 71 super convertible (That was for sale on this forum) and 2 65' Beetle sedans. The convertible is a great driver. We only had to address a few issues. The white sedan is also a driver, runs awesome. mostly cosmetic issues. The blue sedan may be the problem child. Its only been with us a few days but I cant get it to keep an Idle. Later I'll take a pic, maybe y'all can help me determine what I have and what direction to go in. Im very excited to have Georgia Dub, looking forward to the monthly meets. its so cool to have such an active chapter in my hometown. -Andy

Andy, Welcome. You have landed in a soft place my friend. We here on GaDubs are as laid back as it gets. That's part of the Aircooled scene. Most of us here have been around these little beasts for a while and can diagnose just about anything collectively. As far as the Airheads we meet on the second Sat of each month. You will need to check here b/c lately we have been moving around from meeting place to meeting place. Dive in get involved folks here are great folks that will help you with anything.

Welcome to the site! Glad more and more of these cars are making their way to our area, and hope to see you guys out and about soon. We usually meet on the second saturday of each month. There's a big show coming up in Tennessee on the third weekend of April, so I'm not sure how big our usual April meet will be since some of us may be busy getting our cars ready for the trip/show/camping.

Re: Newby in Mcdonough.
Here They are.
Anyone have tips on how to set the timing on this? (009 w 34pict3 i believe) It runs but wont keep an idle. I can smell gas when it stalls. I have just started getting into the car and should know more soon.
The Bentley manual I have is for the older type 1's . I'm begining to search the web and will get the later model Bentley. Im not looking for someone to fix it for me. I am enjoying working on the car, but If anyone sees an obvious problem or can tell me common problems/solutions I'd appreciate it.
Some of you may know these cars. The white one is from Locust Grove. The blue one is from a member of the addicts. (I think) And the Vert is from a member in Rome.

Re: Newby in Mcdonough.
009 timing is 28-32 degrees @ 3000rpm. Idle problem could be many issues but my first suspect is always a vacum leak. Everyone will tell you that the 34pict and a 009 is a bad combo and will need to run rich to run right. I've been running that combo for 15 years now though so I guess I've been doing it wrong.
The electronic cutoff (brass colored cylinder on the left) on mine has come lose once or twice and caused mine not to idle a couple times. Might check that too.

Re: Newby in Mcdonough.
Also good to check the jet on the right side of the carb. The holes on that darn thing are so tiny it tends to clog up. It looks like a brass screw. Take a flat tip, unscrew it, and make sure the holes are clear. IIRC you should be able to see light thru them. I like to take the twist tie from a loaf of bread, pull the paper part off, and use the tiny metal wire part to make sure the holes are clear.

Re: Newby in Mcdonough.
You were on the right track Mike. It was the jets. Not clogged but turned all the way in. I just backed them off and it idles pretty well. I think I need some more advance . I'm getting a flat spot when I go into second gear. I expect the 009 is to blame for that. Thanks all for the advice. We'll be there Saturday.
