how do you tell when your engine is overheating?
just curious, it others me that there is no light or guage on my beetles dash to tell me if the engine is getting hot.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1196002 / try this great alternative to gauges and stuff / you can run this while you are tuning your car or leave it in and run it all the time. With a fan belt and proper tune there is nothing to worry about. Make sure all your tins are complete and in place and correctly installed. Good luck and live long and aircooled

Grab the dipstick.
If it is uncomfortable to hold onto, but you can it is OK.
If it feels like a red hot stoker and you scream like a little girl and pull back your hand, then it is too hot.

I second this, it's not perfect but it will keep you from burning up a type 1.
