I had to look it up too. Its some kind of phosphate coating process to inhibit rust.

Parkerizing

I was watching that show "How it's Made" on the Science Channel, and they were showing cams being manufactured- they parkerized those in a drum to prevent corrosion

Ok, she needs one more click in the rear. I am not sure how I will get the tires on, but we will worry about that later!
I have a 68 tranny with the long axle's, I'm thinking short tubs and axle's might make putting the tires on easier!

Nice!! Post pics when you get them. I'm waiting on new front hard lines before the bleeding process can begin. Getting closer everyday.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
Geez...what a nightmare today. Brakes were scheduled to be delivered today and required signature, so I stayed home today, cause I wanted to make sure I was here to sign for them so I could install them this weekend. At 7am, the status was "on truck for delivery". At 3pm, that status changed to "exception - delivery not attempted". So I called and was told it was a "holiday exception" and the brakes were actually never on the truck for delivery. Apparently they thought my shipping address (my damn house) was closed today for Good Friday!!! I really wanted to get these installed this weekend, so after some choice words, I drove 55 minutes to Ellenwood to pick the package up at the hub. Got the package, opened it in the parking lot and went through everything. Sure enough, the dual circuit master cylinder conversion kit was NOT in the box. Called Nate at wagenswest and asked where the kit was. He said it was in the order on the computer, but didn't make it to the order printout, so he would ship the kit out immediately.
I did get an email notification that the kit was shipped out a few hours later, but man, what a pain. Brakes look very nice though!
Oh well, still plan to get the kit installed tomorrow and just use the old single circuit master to do a few test drives.

Eric hate that about the shipping. Like the kit vented even - those should do the job. Seems like I have seen those on a bus before also !!!

Hey Eric, are those Wilwoods the four pot Dynalite racing calipers? Just curious to see if they changed the color as mine are charcoal grey.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
My box says Dynalite Performance Calipers, so they are probably different. Here's the description from the side of the box.
Unfortunately, I've already ran into a snag. The caliper bracket is hitting the upper side of the kingpin. Barely enough room to turn the steering past the straight ahead position. . I tried putting the bracket on the front side of the spindle, and it won't clear that way at all, so I'm pretty sure I have it on there correctly. I sent an email to WagensWest, but not sure how soon I'll hear back. Probably gonna have to grind a little bit off the bracket to make room. Not sure if this is because the spindles are flipped or what, but I would think that for the $$$ I paid, this shit wouldn't happen!!!

Just heard back from WW. you do have to clearance that bracket when installing on flipped spindles. Oh well. a few minutes with the grinder and I should be back to the install.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
Probably 90% of those will go on lowered Busses, and about 10% on stock height Busses- seems like they'd take that into account

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
My thoughts exactly Pete! Their bread and butter is components for lowering buses, so I just figured it'd be a bolt on affair. Not knocking the product, everything looks super nice, just would have been nice to know up front. I got the drivers side bracket clearanced and it's turning smoothly now. I got a really late start today (spent most of the afternoon cruising around in the bug enjoying the awesome weather), so I'll finish up in the morning.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
Good to hear that they got back quickly and let you know what to do. I agree, they should include that little tid-bit of info when they sell the kit. Checked my old boxes and my caliper was part# 120-6808, caliper fdl 1.38, .38 rotor platinum, so it is different.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
Well got them on and bled earlier today. They definitely stop a lot better, but I don't know.... I need to test drive Glenn or Darryl's bus (or have them test drive mine) to see how they compare. It definitely stops a lot quicker, but I was kinda hoping for a little bit more. Don't think I got anywhere near close to locking them up on my few test spins. Maybe it's the old master cylinder, maybe when I get the later dual circuit cylinder it'll improve a little? Not sure if it has a different bore than the old one.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
Did you go through the bedding in process? I have heard that the wilwoods need to go through that to operate at peak performance. I followed the instructions on the Airkewled site when I first set mine up.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
i didn't do it quite as in-depth as the airkewld sites instructions. I did read about bedding on wilwoods site, but their procedure was to simply:
"Run vehicle up to moderate speed and make several medium deceleration stops to heat up the rotor slowly. This will help reduce the chance of thermal shock caused by un-even heating of the rotor."
So that's what I did. They suggested using used pads when bedding the rotor, but I didn't have any used ones, so I obviously couldn't follow that instruction.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
The difference really comes from HARD stops and no wondering when you stop under normal condidtions. Plus wet braking is about 100% better and there is much less fade in stop and go traffic. Make sure you have your rear adjusters in pretty close. Should help with the front brakes if the rear cylinders engage quicker while you have the single circuit on there.

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
Well, I didn't really try any real hard panic stops. Was gonna wait for the dual circuit master cylinder before I did that. I still haven't gotten my e-brake hooked back up yet, and didn't want to risk stepping on it hard, blowing a rear wheel cylinder and then having no brakes .
On a related humorous note, Nate from WagensWest was the one who had replied to my e-mails about the bracket hitting the flipped kingpin and he told me how to fix the problem. Well this morning, I guess somebody who works for Nate was also checking that e-mail account and replied to my email (which had the picture that I posted above that clearly shows the bracket hitting). His response was "That looks right man". ???

Better to blow it when you dont need it than to lose it when it really counts.

Yes, but best to not even risk blowing it until I get the dual m/c (and get off my lazy bum and see about getting these e-brakes hooked back up!)

Re: Disc Brake Options for a 1965 Bus
So Wagenswest emailed me asking for a few pics and some feedback on their kit. So I told them what i liked about the kit and gave them some pics of the grinding I had to do and also mentioned a few other smaller issues I had. They responded back a little while later and were very appreciative of my feedback. Even sent a cad type drawing of a new improved bracket design they were going to start using so they could be use on stock or flipped spindles. Pretty cool!

That's pretty cool that they solicited feedback, listened, and improved the product rather than the attitude "this is our product, take it or leave it"
